1928 Hudson Essex resto project...

edited December 2010 in HUDSON
I'm helping a friend with a partial restoration on a 1928 Essex 4dr and I'm having a time finding parts. Does anyone know where I can find:

A new set of Intake and Exhaust Valves and possibly valve guides.
A front axle kingpin rebuild kit.
Photos of the original canvas(?) tie rod covers for the longitudinal steering shaft.
Color photos of an original engine bay, and/or paint codes for the engine.
A good source to have the brake shoes relined.
A source for original style weatherstripping/door seals, etc.

This car is in SURPRISINGLY good shape, very little surface rust, the wood is either in excellent shape and/or has been replaced in the past. The body is straight, and the car came pretty much complete.

EDIT: I just got the engine and transmission out of the car today, we also need a set of replacement cork pads for the clutch as there are several missing.

Thanks,

John

The 28 Essex had two different kingpin distinguished by diameter. What is the kingpin diameter of your car? Both sets may be available.
The system uses 2 kingpins, 2 cotter pins, 4 bushes, 8 welsh plugs & 2 thrust bearings. Which of these do you need?

Where is your friend located? There are a number of (for example) brake re-liners across the country (assuming he's in the U.S.) who offer original-style linings.

The parts are easier to find if you can tap into a network of Hudson owners. One such network is the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club (most of this Forum's members are H-E-T members). http://www.hetclub.org/ Your friend might want to consider joining the club in order to receive the magazine as well as the roster of members. Using the roster, for instance, he can determine where the owner of the nearest '28 Essex is. You might then be able to photograph and measure that person's car, in order to have the information to restore your friend's car to factory specs.

Luckily, one of our active Forum members is an expert on '28 Essexes (his everyday-car is a '28 Essex, in fact). I'm sure he'll jump in here before long to ask you questions and offer solutions to your questions.

IIRC the diameter of the pin is 0.802", and yes, I'll also need the bushings, cross pins and plugs. The thrust bearings felt pretty good, I currently have them sitting in mineral spirits trying to soak the crud off them.

We're in the Southeast US (Florida), I'm just trying to find a reputable shop who can get it done right the first time, and I'm also trying to help support other Hudson enthusiasts.

On my on-line library @ hetclub.org/burr there are a couple pieces of literature that may help.
Under "Manuals" (scroll to the bottom of the first page to see a list of files) there is a 1928 Essex owners manual and under "Reference Sheets" a 1928 Essex Mechanical Specifications sheet with a lot of great info.

Geoff Clark (in New Zealand) had these available in the recent past. Geoff contributes to this forum & can be PM'ed. Huddy 42 (another forum poster) is another likely source. If neither those work out then Ron Lever here in NZ does supply them but he doesn't do email. Last time I got some from Ron they were NZ$100 (approx US$73) & you needed to get a machine shop to make the bushes. PM me if I can help further.

I have a few pins left no bushes, can you give me the dia and length and I'll check my stock, also have a few ring gears to suit Essex.107 teeth by memory.

Re the valves, I have used S/H Ford Model A valves, had the heads ground and stems cut and grooved. The metal these old valves were made of was of very high quality I have been told. The valve stems are fractionally latger than original which works well with worn valve guides. Several thousand miles on - working well.
I also have a number of spare clutch corks but not quite a full set if required.
    Good luck
