1930 Hudson Super 8 Water Pump

How's everyone doing? I am new to this forum, but I'm sure someone out there can help me out. A few years ago my father got his hands on a 1930 Hudson Super 8. He's been able to work out most of the mechanical issues, and actually drives it on the highway regularly. The only problem right now is the water pump. It has a nasty leak coming from the packing around the shaft. I know you can replace the packing, but don't know where to get it. Also, is there anyone out there that sells these pumps? Rebuilds them?

Thanks a lot for your time.

YOu need to use square section graphite impregnated packing for the best results. Not sure of the dimensions for the H8, but Super Sixes use 3/16" thick. Should be obtainable from www.restorationstuff.com

I'm no expert on the older Hudsons, but those water pumps with the long shaft that passed through them, all tended to leak. The shaft was steel so the water rusted it wherever it came in contact with it; then, no matter how good the seal was, the water managed to seep out between the seal and the rusted, pitted portion of the shaft. So don't look for a drip-free seal!

One fellow in our chapter with a '29, had a machine shop make up a new shaft of stainless steel. That will never rust / pit, and the seal will always be tight.
  • Thanks a lot for your help/suggestions. I believe that resto place is here in San Diego somewhere. Also, will look in to that stainless steel shaft idea.

Youight also try a GOOD, old fashioned hardware store, water faucets used to have packing around the shaft----worth a try.
