This looks like the usual fibre timing gear stripping and ends up with a rod through the side of the engine block.

I hadn't realized that a stripped timing gear could cause catastrophic failure! Does the piston hit the valves? (Fortunately I replaced my "Masonite" timing gear with an aluminum one, so I'm in no danger.)

G'Day Jon,
What happens is the timing gets out of wack and the crankshaft collides with the camshaft, will not happen on an 8 cylinder as there is more room between the two.

We had a guy here some time ago that when the gear stripped it broke the camshaft in two, he was one of the lucky ones.

No, the piston cannot hit the valves in a flathead...that only happens with an overhead valve engine.

i hate it when my engine gets exploited.Usually happens when i take it to a machine shop that specializes in "vintage and classic".
I have a spare 36 block for you Senor,but Australia is a bit far to post such an item from. hope you can get some help from the english guys.

Unisan8, that's a nice looking car and a real shame about the engine. Most of the spare engines of course are in the US, but you may be lucky enough to find one in Europe. Shipping an engine from the US to Europe can be done but may be expensive.

Any of the Hudson or Terraplane engines from 1936 to 1947 will fit and get you back on the road if you are not too fussy about having exactly the right engine for your car.

The HET (Hudson Essex Terraplane club) puts out an excellent magazine, the White Triangle News, every 2 months which goes out to HET members all around the world. HET club members can place free for sale and wanted advertisements in the WTN, this could be a good way for you to connect with the many HET people who don't read this forum. http://www.hetclub.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46&Itemid=2

When you do find an engine, if it does not have the aluminium timing gears that others have referred to in this thread, contact Huddy42 to buy those gears.

FYI

I am no 3x5 expert, However I dont think the timing gear had anything to do with breaking the rod & block.

Usually breakage occurs when rod babbit gets worn thin and 'rattles' can be heard 'easing off' throttle until a point when one fails. However if a Timing gear is noisy by all means install the modern replacement gear ....

Im sure a motor will surface in a nearby Country but may need to be rebuilt, and if so, replacement parts are available thru Hudson Club Suppliers...

Make sure you get a block and camshaft for a 39 or earlier car. In 40 they moved the distributor to the top rear of the engine, behind the cylinder head, and to put those engines in an earlier car you have to box the firewall to clear the distributor. That is, cut the firewall and build a box to go behind the hole. Good luck. BTW, we have some rebuildable blocks at the shop,I think. We'd have to tear them down and check them. Only problem is we're in southern California. Just in case, our phone is 909-823-9168, Tuesday to Saturday 8am to 5pm.

Does anyone know if the camshaft timing gear in a 35 Terrplane is the fiber type?I'm looking in the 1930-1939 Master parts book and it lists the camshaft gear as the same from 32 thru 35 for the Terraplane.

Yes the gear would be fibre, they did not change to Aluminium until 1947 and the pressure angle was changed as well, so if you change from one to the other both gears must be changed.

FYI
Appears like a Hudson Box for Left Hand Drive but requires a Ford Steering Wheel.
What is wrong with your Box? If Bearings, they can be matched & replaced.

I have a right hand drive and right-side steering box

To convert to left hand drive you will need not only the steering box, but the pedals and mounting brackets etc, plus the mounting bracket for the brake cylinder, the hand brake and mounting, cable, and the l.h.d. levers under the car. Also the drag link and steering arms. I converted a '29 Hudson from right to left hand drive, and there are quite a few pitfalls. Your best bet would be to find a l.h.d. car and transplant all the relevant articles. good luck.

Your English is fine. If want to convert to Left Drive suggest contacting these people for necessary Parts. The EBay Listing may work but need Ford Wheel and other parts mentioned...

This guy in Corning NY Salvage Yard has a '37 Terraplane Parts Car with everything you would need. Contact karhed@zoominternet.net. He is slow replying but I have bought Doors off the car.

1936 to 1942 used the fiber timing gear. This was the start of the 212 engine used till 1942. In 1946 it still was the 212 engine but they improved the timing gears by going to aluminum, and a new crank gear as these have a different pitch than the fiber gear set. You can not mix one with the other, has to be in sets. To install the aluminum gear set in 36 to 42, requires you to modify the front motor plate. If you do not have my tech tip books, try to borrow volume one and go to page 29 and read the work that is required. HUDSON 8's, 46 to 52 have the aluminum set up and to install in earlier 8's require the same modification. Walt.
