Are all intakes the same from 49-56? or are the narrow block/wide blocks different?
or is there a difference from 262 to 308?

I want to put a dual carb setup on my engine but i want to make sure it fits.

thanks

  • I think that the Twin-H intake was first available as a dealer installed option starting in '51 and a factory option from '52 on.

The main difference in the available Twin H Manifolds is the carb bases. The 308 uses carbs with a bit larger base. So in essence there are two different intakes for engines '48 thru '54. The manifold for the 262, and then the manifold for the 308. Add in the '55 & '56, and you have another intake for the 308 which by the way must be used with a complimenting exhaust manifold from a '55 or '56 308 engine.

We sold our first Twin H setup in the fall of 1951 - we had a customer that was really into "HotRod" magazine, and he had read an article that gave him enought info on the coming Hudson twin carb setup to really confuse the whole situation. A call to the Hudson Zone Parts & Service manager got us all on the right track.

So if in understand you right 53jetman, the difference is only the carb base all i would have to do is get a different carb right? Do all the intake ports on the block line up between the two?

    example: Can i put a 56 308 intake on a 53 308 block with out any trouble?

    thanks

Also, the older ones have external equalizer tubes, the later versions are built in. Someone else here will know which year that changed.

55 and 56 intake twin h's are different from 51 to 54. You can put a 55-56 on any 308 engine but you must have the exhaust manifold also, heat riser pattern is different, and you must change the front exhaust pipe. They had to move the manifolds closer to the engine to clear the spring and shock tower in the Nash Hudson body. Walt.

Thanks for the information on the availability of Twin-H on 51 Hudsons.

My Dad bought a new 51 Hudson Hornet 4 door from C & P HUDSON CO. in Burbank, Ca. and it had Twin-H. Since he was a policeman I had wondered if the Twin-H was an option to police departments and if that was how he got it. It's nice to know it was available in 1951.

Were all twin h intakes single barrel or were they 2 barrel carbs or both?

if i find one of these intakes i plan on using a set of headers instead of the factory exhaust manifold, that would be the way to go im guessing right?

thanks for all the help guys.

You'll get different answers to that one. IMHO all you need to do is look at the factory exhaust manifold to see where your biggest flow improvement can be made on these engines. Even the 7X dual-outlet setup still uses the same log-style upper manifold section. Design provides good access for tappet maintenance, though.

Good idea, I havent worked on a hudson with headers and i would imagine that would be hard to adjust the tappets.

thanks for the for your input.

**maybe I will have to plan on installing hydraulic lifters then i wouldnt have to adjust them right?

Please conside the Dual Outlet Exhaust Manifold Adapter that has been produced by several people (Danny Barrier & Bob Parks). I have several left from our first run of these and just installed one on my 1949 Super Six, not loud but very open, and we are running twin pipes from the bottom of the adapter to the rear bumper. Richie has a utube video with a real nice sound, mine is a lot quieter. I like Richie's sound better. I havent tried to adjust the valves since installing the adapter, but should be able to. Email me if you want pictures or more info. hetpbebop@gmail.com Richie's utube address is:

Just to clarify, the 55/56 Twin H will NOT work with a stock 54 exhaust header correct?

    Lots of good info here...

    Correct

To add a little bit, the '55-56 Twin H intake had additional vacuum ports (to accomodate power brakes I guess) and the '56 (only) used hydraulic lifters in the 308. Are these available? I don't know.

If you just remove the heat valve, that alone give the 308 a big boost, and saves the manifold gasket for longer life. That valve is a big hold back on exhaust flow, that is why headers are a big help, no heat valve. I have 134,000 miles on my engine and have not changed the manifold gasket yet, all this in 12 years. I still have the resonator and the stock muffler and a quiet car, but no one passes me on hills. Walt.
  • Thanks for the comments Walt, and we did remove the heat riser flap in the manifold to reduce back pressure. We left the pivot rod to make it look original. Thanks, Bob P.
