Timing Problem
I finally got my rebuilt 308 running and it sounds great. Now I want to set the timing with a timing light. In my first attempt at this, I have the distributor turned clockwise as far as it will go and I still can't align the long timing mark with the pointer. It is about 3 short timing marks off. The long timing mark is above the pointer. What is going on here?
Other than that, the engine sounds fine, running smooth with no burps or gurgles.
Can't road test however as car is not driveable yet.
I disconnected the vacuum advance so that is not the issue.

Glad you got it running! I followed your previous posts when you couldn't get the engine to run, what did you find as the problem?

Thanks for your responses. John, my Special has the Twin H setup and I had the carbs rebuilt. Well in the front carb, the needle wasn't seating and gas was being pumnped right into the engine, flooding big time. YUK. The carb guy ordered and installed a new needle and seat and that solved the problem. Now I am wrestling with the timing. This being my first Hudson restoration, it is an ongoing challenge,

Thanks Hudson308 but now I am in a dilemma. Walt Mordenti says to move the wires one position counterclock and you say one position clockwise.
To repeat myself the distributor is turned clockwise as far as it will go. At that setting the long timing mark is above the pointer about 3 short marks. So, is it clockwise or counterclockwise when moving the wires?

If the long mark is three points to the left of the pointer, you are slightly ahead of t.d.c. The distributor shaft turns clockwise, and if you have the distributor turned clockwise as far as it will go on the visible quadrant on the left, then try loosening the bolt that holds the quadrant to the under side of the distributor. This is slotted, and gives you extra adjustment. If you have a workshop manual you can see this bolt on page 3-10 figure 8. Having said all that, I don't think 3 points ahead like you have is going to be very far off the optimum setting anyhow. Good luck
