Question on window seat/channel

First question is regarding the metal window seats, i.e. the long metal piece that the bottom of the glass sets in on the rear doors of my 54 sedan. Are these pieces interchangeable from driver side to passenger side? I have gutted the rear doors to install new window channel and those two pieces are identical. Just seems weird to me.

Also, I was able to salvage the 3 clips that hold the channel to the top of the door. Can they be reused and if yes what is the trick to reinstalling them?

Thanks,
Doug

  • In order to salvage the window setting channel, you must reverse the bottom lug on the channel which hooks onto the window crank. Make sure to locate exactly where it should go then use a chisel ,break the spot welds and reverse the facing side of the lug. Re-attach the lug in the opposite position of its opposing side. The left and right lower window channels should be a mirror image of each other. If not, they won't work. As far as the channel clips are concerned, they can be re-attached if you bend the connecting tabs and re install them. If you use a really good adhesive you may not need them at all. I've done it both ways. Good luck.
  • Thanks Lance. When you say "bottom lug", I am assuming you mean the piece about 5 inches long that is spot welded to the bottom of the setting channel. It is notched so that the window crank can move back and forth. Correct?
  • Yes, thats the one.
  • So Lance, what is the trick to reinstall the salvaged channel clips without damaging the new window channel? Press them in with pliers or tap them in lightly with a hammer?
