Hudsons in the Grand National Roadster Show
My son Rick and his wife Christina took me to the the Grand National Roadster Show today for a early birthday present. I had never been to one. I really didn't expect to see any Hudson on display but I was looking anyway. Before long I spotted a customized 49 Hudson. A short time later there was another custom 49 Hudson. Rick pointed that one out to me. It was changed so much I almost walked right past it. Wow two Hudsons. Then my day was made complete when I spotted a beautiful 46 Hudson PU. It was heavily modified, but still very recognizeable. I'm partial to Hudson PU's. Seeing that PU was the highlight of the day for me.
If you want to see some Hudsons in a major national car show, this is the one. Tomorrow is the last day of the show. It is being held at the Pomona Fair Grounds. There are about 8 or 9 large buildings filled with all types of beautiful show cars plus even more very good looking cars parked outside around the buildings. And even more in the parting lot. We were there about 4 hours and didn't see everything. As we were leaving Rick said there was a third step down in the show. Darn I missed it.
Will post pictures later. I did get carried away taking pictures of the PU.
Thanks Rick and Christina, I had a wonderful time today.

:cheer: Lee, I am sorry that I missed this Show. Ed Muller took his step down Hudson, he just finnished restoring it. I think Ed's stepdown was customized in the early '50's and was a cover car for "Hot Rod" magazine. :woohoo:0

The black Hudson is as stunning as it is intimidating. Any photo's of the interior or engine? Would love to see this car tooling down the highway. It is a major attention-grabber.
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thanks for all the pictures Lee.
So are you taking notes on what to do to your truck? :P0 -
Thanks, guys, for the pics of the Mueller car. Sure looks to be cut in about the same way as mine, but hard to tell, with black car in a dark room! Sure would like to see it outside, and get a chance to do a close examination.
Anybody have contact info for Ed?0 -
This car was customized in the '50's and featured in Hot Rod magazine. Ed acquired it a few years ago and restored it. I had photos of the original when I ran NHRA Historical Services and supplied Ed with copies. I probably still have the originals around somewhere. Look under "Mueller's Muscle Car" in the California section of the Club Directory.0

Thanks, Sam- In the directory? Now why didn't I think of that? LOL
I actually remember the car from when it was in Hot Rod for the second time, in about 1958, when I was a lad of 10. I was in charge of a magazine subscription drive for the school, and my "pay" was a year's subscription to the magazine of my choice. No "Boys Life" for me- I took Hot Rod!0 -

I had the same deal at my school, Mike, and I chose "MAD." Guess that says a lot right there...0 -

Sent you an emai. Lee0 -
Lee,
The truck looks like it's a good ride to start with. And you have a great helper there with you! Great pictures Lee.
Take care,

Every time I look at the 46 Hudson PU show truck I notice something new. This time I noticed that the rear inner wheel wells, appear to be the top part of rear fenders. Looks like they may bolt both inner and outer fenders to the bed side. Thats clever.
Another interesting note about the truck. I was talking to Perry Spring today and he told me he supplied some of the parts for the truck. And the parts from the truck, not to be reinstalled, Perry got. I'll have to ask him if the instrument panel I got from Perry was the one from this truck. That would be something!

I took a few pics of the Duane Aspargren (sp) sectioned Hudson while I was at the show.
Mike - I was hoping to get these to you.
Unfortunately, I somehow missed the Black Brougham...I would have LOVED to smoke that think over.

Great pictures hudson custom. I'd like to know what camera you used. You can even see details on the other side of the building. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Thanks for the pics, Hudsoncustom- they have been duly saved!
I had seen pictures of that taillight treatment somewhere, without knowing what car it was on. Those are '49 Merc lights, and they fit the contour of the fender very nicely. 'Cept now I can't do them on my car, obviously.
Hows things with you? Are you coming to Billetproof this summer? I think I'm going to make a point of being there- I need to "get out" more!
Mike0 -
I looked the car over pretty well. I liked the merc lights, and the grille opening is pretty similar to the way I did mine, even down to the peak in the center of the opening.
The car looks like it was sectioned similarly to yours. It looks like they cut out the strip at the natural break in the trim line that runs along the top of the rocker. I'd guess 3-4 inches was cut out.
Things are good with me. I'm re-working the front end of the Hudson at the moment...re-shaping the front of the fenders to give it a bit more shape and get rid of the flat spot under the lights. I've also added frenched headlights...the early style where the light glass is even with the frenched ring, not the later tunnelled type.
I'll be at Billetproof for sure this year, and hopefuly, the car will be in paint by then.
