Hood Ornament re-plate
Just a note to say that I received my 53 Hood ornament back today from the plater. Another plater had given it two tries and finally refunded my money after not being able to correctly plate the NOS 53 piece. (it basically looked like crap)
It looks first rate now, the best potmetal plating that I have had done to date. only a few dollars more then the first plater. I found this plater on one of the rod forums.
The plater is--

Very happy with this piece now. Highly recommended.

Not a lot of folks that can do decent pot metal plating out there. Glad you found someone that you like....0

Brownie, would have liked to went with you guys, but cost was a factor and this guy was highly recommended so I tried him. Glad I did.
The total to re-do the other guys work and re-plate was 235.00 with shipping. You had quoted me 300-400. This was an NOS piece so it didn't have pits.0 -
Not a problem. There are some folks out there that really do good work and having one close at hand where you can work with them to get the quality that you want is important. Would love to see some photo's and particularlly when you have it installed on the car. Look forward to seeing the car in person....0

I sent a bunch of pot metal to Paul's in PA and was very pleased with the result. Every piece looked new on both sides following their treatment.
The process employed in replating metal is in conflict with environmental regulations in many areas. In view of this I wonder just how much longer companies will be able to employ traditional procedures?

The chrome process gets a bad rap from the environmentalists. It is not the best working conditions and the older processes were all open tank processes. The newer processes all cover the tank and process and filter the chemicals that used to escape to the air. All metal is a health hazard when it is sandesd, grinded or buffed. The harder the metal the more toxic the dust. Chrome is one of the bad players but then again so is gold and silver.0

Well to blazes with those nazi environmentalists. Forget the chrome restrictions and remember what you're restoring is directly in their crosshairs as is the fuel and lubes that they need to run. 10 years from now we'll be trying to make homebrew gasoline just to start up our babys! Most of the cars are chromeless now with plastic taking the place. I would guess the cost of chrome and all the restrictions is gradually killing that industry. Boy do we ever need a government house cleaning!0

Well, I for one, am glad that the environmentalist have helped create a safer work environment. The material we use is so much better on our health than 30 years ago, who remembers spraying cars with imron 30 years ago? Not many body and paint men live to see old age without major breathing problems or paint-filler dust related issues.
Same can be said about griping about auto safety and modern car safety. No comparison!0 -
I remember very well when Dupont introduced their Poly paint. They brought it to the college where I was taking body and fender classes. They gave us the training that included fresh air respirators. One student, a very good "gunman" went in the booth to paint his car. Did not take head of the precautions and died two days later. I also agree that the controls for the dangers are important. I retired from being a safety professional in the aerospace industry and I know from first hand experience the hazards of some of these materials.0
