Engine Conversion and trans adaptors
IF I were to put a modern engine in my '40 Super Six and want to keep the three on the tree shift, what would be the best way? Throwing this out for ideas.
Can a three on the tree be made into a five on a tree? Is it easy to adapt another motor to the stock trans (remember a thread about this a while back but cannot locate it)?

Depends on what mean by "modern engine", a '53 Dodge Red Ram hemi V8 would be a modern engine in your '40
Or are you looking at a double overhead cam, variable timing, aluminum uber 6 cyl. engine that can talk :huh: . I would imagine you could use bell housings up to the sixties and keep the 3 speed. Adapters to mate any number of engines to the BW 3 speed were available in the fifties and sixties. Converting a three on the tree to five on the tree would be nearly impossible because all 5 speeds I'm aware of are rail shifters (no levers). I am using a Wilkap adapter to mate a S10 T5 to my 308. They provided a clutch plate, flywheel and alum. adapter. They are still making them (to order).

Thanks for the lead. Meant to send this sooner and then a last minute overseas trip was handed to me. Wilkap Co is somewhat close to me so I will ask them about an adapter.
Want to keep it an inline 6 so that limits the choices somewhat.0 -
Would a Jeep I6 and 5-spd serve your purposes? The engines last to well over 100,000 miles, and would be related by marriage to your Hudson. There are all sorts of parts available from 4WD vendors.0

Craig Kistler has a Ford 300 cu 6 in his '47 coupe. This is a very nice conversion. Dany Spring makes an adaptor 308 to 700 R4 and has this setup in his '40 2 dr sedan. Either would give you information, both are listed in the Club directory (California).0

I can attest to the awesome-ness of the Ford 300 Big Six. My best friend had a 89 Bronco with a EFI 300. When we opened it up after a little misforune (remember kids, assembly lube and priming an engine are VERY important. Cams don't last long without.) the bores were still pristine after 200,000+ miles. 100,000+ of which were put on by him, HARD.
Anyway, I have that engine partially disassembled. And while I really want to use it in something I don't really see me getting to it anytime soon. Anyone wants it, make an offer.0 -

I know of a 46 Hudson PU in Pasadena with I believe is a 300 CI Ford 6. Rons truck has a cool looking black crincle painted finned valve cover with HUDSON on top. If your interested what trans he has I'll try to find out for you.
By the way, what late model engine do you have in mind? Lee

A friend of mine was a parts dealer at a Ford dealership for many years. He hated the 300-6...they NEVER sold any parts for it...:cheer:0

An FI Ford 300 is top of my list and I am open to add more options.
Criteria are: easy to get parts, reliable, others can work on it, an inline for balance and looks, and keep the three on a tree.

I'll gladly sell the FI stuff off of mine if you find a 300 without. I have the throttle body, intake manifold injector plumbing/harness (multi-point injection). I do not have the ECU though.0
