have discovered that my waterpump is leaking coolant from the bottom
i seem to remember that this wa a problem back in the fifties. is it a big job to fix? there is a seal shown in diagram. can they be purchased any where? is there a
rebuilder for these. this pump was replaced during motor rebuild several years ago and would not have more than 25 miles on it. any help appreciated
thanks steve

    Steve-

With the few miles on it, I doubt the pump is bad. Water pumps have only one moving part, the shaft itself. Try wiggling the shaft up and down or side to side. Any play represents a bad pump and would need rebuilding. On the other hand, if no play is detected and the shaft is rigid, then the gasket is bad and simply replacing the gasket with new sealant should do the trick. Either way, the pump needs to be pulled.

there appears to be about a 3/16 diameter hole with the drip is coming from
could this be a indicator that the seal has failed there is no movement in the shaft

The leak is out the weep hole, (designed to leak there when the seal or packing fails). Could be you have the wrong pound radiator cap and your systems pressure is exceeding the water pumps sealing pressure limit. More likely is you need a new water pump.
  • You need a new water pump. Seal dried out. Contact Dave Kostansek in Ohio, he sells rebuilt water pumps 1-440-293-4079 call before 8pm Ohio time. Walt.
