Gas Tank Wiring
So, what is the proper wiring harness feed for the Fuel Gauge Sending Unit wire?
Previous owner has a "replacement" coming to tank from back seat. And this replacement is attached to the Gas Guage in the Dash.
Yet there is a "stray" wire in my trunk that is the correct color code for the unit. However, I can't find it in the wire bundle going to the rear of the car at the dash.
Second question...A few of you have mentioned running a ground wire from teh gas tank/sending unit. Please explain this in more detail.

Run a ground wire from one of the sending unit screws to a good clean ground on the car body. That way you're not relying on simply tank contact with the straps and body which dirt and corrosion can play havoc with.0

For the original power feed wire under the dash, check the temp gauge. Originally the power feed goes to the temp gauge, then there's a short wire from there to carry power to the fuel gauge.0

Got that part. I have already replaced the Feed Wire from the Temp Sending Unit as it was dry, cracked and basically broken.
I am trying to locate the feed line for the Fuel Gauage. The "new" wire runs from the back seat, under the door sills, into the frame and back out at the kick plate under the dash.
I guess I need to peel back more covering from the OEM harness that seems to go the the trunk and run teh lights.0 -
You faked me out by calling it the feed wire. That term means it's the power source wire. The one going back to the tank sender is a grounding wire. Don't know on the stepdowns, but in my '47 that wire comes from the rear down through the left windshield post.0

Sorry, Park. I was taught "feed" as in feeding the signal, not the power when working with gauges. I apprecaite the help.0

The harness under the left side of the dash goes up the left side of the windshield, over the top of the door, or doors and back down by the left side of the back window into the trunk to a splitter over the left tail light. Some one rewired your car and didn't want to remove the headliner. Key wire goes to one gauge and crosses over to the other. The sending unit is a ground circuit which goes directly to the fuel gauge. Ground the tank as stated above. Walt0

OK. Where is the OEM wire supposed to leave the trunk and head to the Fuel Guage Sending Unit?0

At the left front corner of the trunk floor. Goes right to the sending unit. There has to be a rubber grommet in the hole with the wire through it. Walt.0
