Day after Thanksgiving junkyard trip....

Growing up, we never went hunting, well, maybe for old car parts....

anyway, tradition was tohave a day after Thanksgiving junkyard trip, which was a long time yearly event. For some reason, intererests changed, friends grew apart, junkyards got crushed... etc... whatever the reason, it stopped happening.

Last year we revisited this, but made it a day before Thanksgiving trip, and went to one of the only junkyards we had left to go to. It's called Mt. Pleasant Mills, and it's located in Perry County, which is about a 90 mile~ drive for us. Previous to last year, it was 12-15 years since we weere there previous.... and a lot changed....

I got pictures from last year, and for the most part, with exception to a currnt crushing effort, yes, another junkyard is pretty much gone... the remaining hudsons pretty much stayed the same...

So for my Thanksgiving treat for all of you, here's a walk thru the junkyard on thanksgiving... Hope you all enjoy!

this 48 (or maybe 49 coupe, probably a commodore 6, which we were never able to access, due to the high level of "picker" permanently built up around it, has been a mainstay on top of the hill. It is still there, and in existence, but not for long. It is pretty much gone, as are the rest of the cars, as you will soon see...

48-9s6.jpg

this 48 or 49 super six 4 door is gone (crushed). When this car came in the junkyard about 15 years ago, it very well could have been saved, If memory serves correct, even the interior wasn't too bad. Such a shame, what time does to old neglected cars...

50c6.jpg

This 50 commodore six sits on top of the hill, in the swamp (the whole yard is pretty much swap, on top of the hill, in the valley, etc... This car is the same as what I got, it was equipped with supermatic drive, and actually yielded several trim pieces this last visit. It is still there, but again, not for long. Also, I can't find the picture, but there's another 50 commodore 4 door, it's an 8 cylinder, equipped with supermatic drive in the lower area, where the swamp is a bit deeper.

54wasp.jpg

This 54 wasp, which is kind of uncommon, is still there, but the crusher is close. We got a few useable parts off this one, some trim pieces, etc... and a few linkage items, but this one was so rusty, that the trunk lid rusted off the frame and was laying on the ground, held on with a trunk light wire.

This 51 super brougham was one on the other side of the road, it was moved across the road, and this last visit this year, it was crushed. It was never a terrific parts source for us, pretty much picked over for some time before we got to it, probably would have yielded a good set of rear 2 door fenders for someone, but it's too late now.

This 52 hornet was moved from across the road, and it too was quite rough. It yielded a few parts last year, but nothing this year, since it was at the bottom of a crushed pile of cars.
  • Ya know.... shucks, the pictures here really are quite meaningful, in that, if I didn't care so much for what I've got in my Hudson, the whole "Thanksgiving" meaning may not have the same meaning that it has for me today. Between the family, the job, the country itself, and all that my Pacemaker has seen before me.... makes all the trouble and parts very worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing this trip to the yard - to think that pieces of art such as these were left to rot the years away is sad, but maybe for some it is fitting. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
  • Hudson Kid,

Thanks for the pictures. I have always found junkyards sad in a way but then again I see these pictures and I know that there are still lots of parts out there. Looking at pictures like these should be a reminder of how special it is to have a old car that is still original and intact after all these years.

Today I took my 48 Commodore to Jack in the Box (breakfast) and then Hollywood Video to pick up a DVD for the kids to watch tonight. I was disappointed as I only had two people come up to me and ask about the car. Normally, I get atleast three inquiries on a trip somewhere. Must be a holiday!...... Niels

Boy - if that Trunk handle in the 3rd picture down (green car) doesn't have a broken base I could sure use one!

How far is that junkyard from where you live?
  • A fun trip, but probably the last one to this yard. It's North of Harrisburg up Rt 11/15. Turn left on 104 to Flint Valley Rd and turn right. It was owned by Lester Pyle who passed away 3 months ago. Larry is running the yard, but it sounds like most of the old stuff will be crushed. We did pull a black 53 Hornet sedan out many years ago not too long after it arrived. Only thing that we missed was someone got the tinted windshields from the first time we saw it. Also about the same time someone got a dark green 2 door Jet that may have been restorable that wasn't in the yard too long.
  • Rambo, about 90 miles one way

    Dan,

the trunk handle was to far gone. If you are willing to even settle on a pitted one, and off of a 50, for that matter, let me dig around and see what I got. I am real sure the handle was busted in two. If you look at the trunk lid, it's almost following the contour of the bend. The other 50 on the other side of the swamp was about the same. Chrome didn't survive well in the yeard, especially pot metal. I would have to imagine if you ask around, a 48-9 commodore trunk handle is available, and I know you have been looking for some time. Are you willing to accept a poor 50 handle, as long as it's not broken? In my travels, these seem to turn up, and even the possibility of finding a nice NOS one should not be out of the realm of reality.

As far as the 53 Hornet 4 door that Hudsondad speaks of, here's a picture from the "archives" of that car, and Hudsondad, looking much "younger" and youthful. Also, of special interest, note the tow vehicle, a 78 chevy blazer, that was probably more rusty that the 53 hornet, and further memories recall that the quarters on that 78 were rusted thru in 1980. (but it got the white and red repaint and new quarters, in the mid 80's)

Hudsondad thinks that we should have kept this one, and at the time I thought it was pretty far gone, but this was around 1991 or so, at a best guess...
