Removing Mainshaft to U-Joint Yoke Nut

I am trying to remove the transmission mainshaft to U-joint yoke nut from my '49 Hudson six with overdrive and it is not coming off. So I thought I would check here to make sure that the nut is not reverse threaded and for any other hints on removing nut.

    No, it is not left hand thread. Use a bigger socket handle. You can try shocking it loose. Put the gearshift in reverse, and use a blunt chisel and 5 lb hammer. if the tranny is off the motor you can use a large Stillson wrench on the yoke to hold it from turning. Good luck.

    Make sure overdrive is locked out, put trans in low or reverse,get a long handled wrench, grunt a lot! Good luck. BTW, a sI remember that's a lock nut on there, you know, the kind that sorta looks like a castle nut with saw slots instead of notches for a cotter pin.

    Perhaps you could get a 3' long piece of heavy angle or RHS, and weld a few pieces of steel around one end to make a hollow box shape that would fit over the yoke to hold it in place. Then wedge it in a convenient spot. Then use 1/2" drive sockets and the longest bar possible to break the seal of the nut. A bit of preparation work, but no damage to the gears. Other HETers can then borrow your tool also. Barry

    I guess you are wanting to change the center carrier bearing?. If so, you already have the driveshaft out. If you are not planning on changing the u-joints,tape the caps in place so they don't fall off. Take the driveshaft over to the work bench and put the yoke of the center u-joint in the vise. Don't over tighten it,but this should hold it while you loosen the nut. I use a very large pair of slip-joint pliers and haven't had any problems. If you are trying to remove the nut on the output yoke of the trans., again the large slip-yoke pliers to hold the u-joint yoke,rachet the nut off. I use an inpact while holding it. It should be a nut,lock washer and a special,keyed flat washer. Good luck

    I use a LARGE pipe wrench to hold the u-joint trunnion and an impact wrench and 6-point socket to remove the nut.

    Thanks for all your help guys. I am trying to replace the rear transmission seal. I was almost sure it was not reverse threaded, but wanted to sure it was not before getting radical. I have the tool to hold transmission yoke and I have tried a impact wrench with no success.

    There are several types of aerosols pressure packs that might help. I believe they somehow break the seal allowing a little penetrant to get in. Im not talking about the CRC product. See if any of your friends have one. I also have had a lot of success with a small torch I use for pot metal repair.It fits onto a small camping gas cyl. Again the expansion breaks the seal of the nut that hasnt been touched for 50 years. Barry
