What year is this Essex medallion?

Can anyone identify the applicable year(s) for this Essex medallion? I'm told that it goes on the hubcap, is that correct? (This information comes from a company that reproduces these items for cars, on demand. However, they are not sure what year it fits. I want to update my "Hudson Repro Parts" website with the correct information.)

Hi Jon. I'm not sure what year this would go to but, I had a Essex bumper that had a similar badge in the middle of it. I've never seen a hubcap with this logo on it. Could be an after market item.

    What diameter is it?
  • With 2 holes, it sure would not be for hubcaps. I,ve never seen any of these in all my HET years. Walt.

I think you will find it fits in the centre of the big nut that holds the wire wheels on up to 28 Essex.

Spenser, by the "nut" do you mean the hubcap? It seems strange to think that this medallion would be fastened to a nut beneath the hubcap, where it wouldn't be seen. Or, am I misunderstanding what you say?

Here is a photo of a wheel and hubcap that I found on the internet, for a 1928 Essex. For some reason there seems to be no Essex emblem at all, on this particular hubcap!

There is no way in the wide world that this is a picture of a '28 Essex wheel. I think Spencer is right. The Buffalo wire wheels have a threaded cap that holds the wheel on to the hub, and this badge is rivetted on to that.

The round red Essex medallion I showed, is 1-5/8" in diameter.

The company also makes a medallion to fit Houk wire wheels. It's 2-1/4" across (not sure if it's round or hexagon) and has two rivet holes.

From the replies I've received here, it seems logical that the red medallion is riveted to the nut (or spin-off cap?) of a Buffalo wheel, and the larger medallion (noted above) would be the same for a Houk wheel.

    Right on Geoff.
