What should I use to attach a new oil pan gasket to the oil pan before re-installing? Just a small coating of gasket maker? thanks :)

  • I used a thin coat of blue rtv silicone gasket maker on both sides, spread with my finger. More importantly make sure the pan rails are flat. Mine were somwhat mushroomed from previous overtighting. And of course don't overtighten bolts. Jim

my experience has been if you are going to use a silicon gasket sealer...be VERY stingy. that stuff will ooze out and form beads that eventually migrate throughout the engine. regards, tom
  • I use a thin film of spray on gasket tack. You spray on let set couple minutes its tacky holds the gasket in place. The gaskets from Dale Cooper and Randy Maas are good they seal in themselves you do not need to add gasket maker. Just need something like gasket tack to hold it in place while you bolt it up.

    another thing you can do.
a little smear of grease on the pan flange will keep it in place.you don't have to worry about a glob running through your engine looking for a port to plug and you won't spend a night scraping it off next time. as mentioned make sure your pan flange is flat and you properly tighten the screws.
  • :) Thank to all for your replies, I am going to a auto swap meet tomorrow (Sunday march 27) and thought I would ask before I shop, now I will have to dress warmly because this is Ontario, Canada and it's supposed to be cold tomorrow. Thanks again

A long time ago my friend Bernie Segfreied, gave me this tip: keep a pan gasket inplace when installing the best method was to tie the gasket to the pan with thread. Later he modified that to included rubber bands looped through the gasket and pan holes. You would of course use the sealer of choice on both sides of the gasket before installing to the engine.
