steering center arm and wiring questions

The car is a 46 Hudson Super six! I am removing the draglink and do not understand the adjusting plug and ball seat relationship, need some help here in removing the link on my way to replacing the bearing in the center arm. Any advice here would be appreciated. My manual does not give any information on the bearing. Any idea where I could get a new bearing or what the number is??

Also I am starting to rewire the ignition system. With a 6volt positive ground system what guage wiring do I need?? Is there a univeral wiring size/guage that I could use for most of the rewiring??

One last question.....what is the husonite fluid that is used in the fluid clutch? Is their a substitute fluid?? Thanks so much JR

Someone will jump in here real soon with answers to all your questions, but to answer the easiest first...

Hudsonite is still available, manufactured by two different sources. C&P Products of Maryland makes the original formula and it can be obtained from the H-E-T Club Store (if you're a Club member) -- go to the Club site http://www.classiccar.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13 and look for the Store link. Doug Wildrick makes his new, improved version of Hudsonite and it's available at his website, http://vintageautorestoration.com/ . In a pinch you can use automatic transmission fluid, but I'm not sure which type is advisable. I just use the 'real thing'.

As to wiring, you need heavier-gage than 12 volts, that's for sure. For starters be sure you have the correct battery-to-starter cable, I think it's a #1. Dave Kostansek has them for sale in various lengths but you may be able to find one at your local auto or tractor supply store as well.

All of that centerpoint steering renewal stuff is available from Hudson people; someone will come in here, and give you ideas on where to go.

I'm not sure you're in the Club, but if not, it wouldn't be a bad idea to join. You tap into a network of Hudson parts suppliers and technical information. Much easier and faster than having to wait for our answers here at the Forum!

I'll second that JR. The Mechanical Procedure Manual has a section on 'Electrical' that gives you a numbered wiring diagram with a chart for wire sizes for each number

I used it to rewire my 47 Pickup.

Assuming that the drag link is similar to a stepdown, remove the cotter pin, which will allow you to turn the plug in the end enough to disengage the link. There is a special socket for this which makes it easier but you could do it with a large screwdriver. Make sure it's all snug but not too tight when you reassemble it. You would be surprised how much play you can get in the wheel if this is not adjusted. It also affects the centering of the steering wheel. If I've screwed anything up here someone will let us know. Good luck!
