'37 Sedan
Hey everybody, newbie here,I originally posted this in the general topic location by mistake, anyway I just picked up this '37 sedan, I think it is a deluxe because of the trunk, can anybody verify that for me? Also after I took the head off the engine I found allot of rust and I'm not sure the engine can be saved, are there sill engine parts available? I have restored allot of Chevy's, but this will be my first Hudson, I have 3 more Hudson's that need restored also.

Here's a picture of the back trunk.0

Engine compartment length indicates it's a Terraplane. The trunk doesn't tell you if it's a Deluxe or a Super, since either trunk was available in both series. Serial number should start with a 71 or 72 (72 is a Super). Deluxes came with sun visor and taillight only on the driver's side, though the right-side counterparts were available as options. Do the front fenders have emblems or holes for emblems on the front surface, a foot or so from the bottom? If so, it's a Super series. If not, it's a Deluxe.0

If you can get it apart and there are no cracks, it can be rebuilt. You don't want to have to bore it over .030 tho, the walls aren't that thick and the cylinders are siamesed. Parts are available from several sources.0

If you're new to the Hudson thing, you may find it advantageous to join the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club (on the web at http://www.hetclub.org/). It's an invaluable resource for parts, history and technical information. Most of the people here on the Forum, are Club members. There may also be a local chapter of the Club in your area, with members who own '37's as well, and who would be good to know. What area did you say you lived in?0

That engine looks pretty clean actually, as they go. It's probably stuck, so best to take it apart. Don't try to turn it over as you can strip the timing gear which is fiber if the valves are stuck. Happened to me on the 39 I'm rebuilding.
The rust comes off with a knotted wire brush on an angle grinder. Might need to grind the valve seats. No inserts and don't need em for the block is chrome alloy. Guides, valves, rings etc are available.
I see you don't have the clutch apart yet. It's a corker. (as in a wet cork disk)e. Might want to drain the fluid that's in there thru the plugs in the front of the flywheel and put some solvent in there for a few days as the corks tend to stick to the flywheel and pressure plate. Be good to wait until the crank is separated from the rods and valves so you can turn it every couple of days. You'll refill later with fluid avail from the club or some people use Dexron tranny fluid.
By the way, the hump trunk is the touring option ($15 extra in '36)0 -
Is the front-door vent window exclusive to the Series 72?
I have I have tinted, tempered, unused front door glass to fit this car, will give away, for shipping cost.

Thank you everybody for responding, I live in southwest New Mexico close to the Arizona border I also have another '37 4-door Terraplane in much better condition that I am starting on now. I did join the Hudson club recently, My father-in- law gave me these four Hudson's to restore,so I'm learning as I go.Thank you Uncle Josh for the info on the Engine,I will do as you suggest an see if I can restore it. The Black '37 is the one I am starting on now.0

Bill N, I would like take you up on your offer,I don't know if it will fit, but I will try to find out, thank you.0

I believe the Deluxe (model 71) cars did not have vent windows, while the Super (model 72) cars did.0
-
That is correct, Jon. The windows are for a series 72 2-door sedan. The vendor cut them in error, the vendor later sent the correct glass, did not retrieve the wrong ones.
Burnlove: these will fit the 2-door pictured in your original posting, they will not fit your 4-door sedan. I think the "wings" will fit.

Just to confuse the issue, the "Standard" (no frills) models were called the De-Luxe, and the Up-market model with the extras was called the Super. Pretty silly really. A bit like Holden in Australia called their bog-standard model the "Special".0
