Bolt torque question
I am preparing to put the crankshaft into the 37 and have a question concerning the torquing of the mains stude's, Into the block -what is the procedure? Also, after the main caps are put in place and the nuts torqued to 90lbs (dry), do you still use the cotter pins through the castle nuts?

i have a friend in the machine shop business for over 30 years. used to race, etc. he says proper torque is what keeps the nuts and studs together. cotter pins can end up floating around in the engine. remember..under the best of circumstances, cotter pins can only keep the nut on the stud. they do nothing to keep the stud in the block. just one man's opinion. regards, tom0

Isn't that why you lock both studs & castellated nuts with one length of wire as distinct from separate split (cotter?) pins !!0

i think so. yes, but he did not ask about safety wire.. regards, tom0

So, instead of cotter pins, go ahead and use safety wire? Even using that method, you will have to move the nut one way or the other to line up the holes.0

i have seen some guys after torqueing, if the holes did not align, remove the nut and use emery cloth to remove a small amount of material from the nut and then retorque to specification and safety...or just tighten to the next castellation and safety. regards, tom0
