splasher engine main bearing cap packing
Making sure I do this right the first time. When I disassembled the 37 Terraplane six -- s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm97/studeba...Terraplane%20engine/
I noticed that the main bearing packing holes were filled with RTV instead of rope packing. Is this the accepted method of doing this now? Doesn't oil need to drip down or "wick" through the packing?

Some folks do use the RTV. I've tried it once with good results. I've heard of some using both ... RTV worked into the rope packing to ensure a good seal (there's no need for oil to "wick").

Just don't use lead like some nut did to my 40 eight. Bent the heck out of my puller it did. Had to drive it out of the horizontal hole with a punch. I've always used the heavy cotton string/rope and pack each 'bite' in in good and tight with a punch.0

KERRY -- I've used the strings from a dollar store rope mop on several engines -works good- same size as what comes in overhaul kits and 1 mop does MANY engines. PACK IT TIGHT , TRIM FLUSH!!! Wicking is not an issue here - it's just Hudson's way of sealing the caps to the block .0
