dana rear inspection

I have the cover off of newly aquired dana/hudson rear. The gears are not chipped or obiously worn. How do I determine if it needs rebuild or just clean and fill with new oil? The "oil" that drained out was as thick as driveway sealer(?). I have done Web searches for dana 44 and found rebuild info, but nothing on how to determine if you need to do a rebuild. Not so deep pockets Dave.

Rebuild could be costly. I had my entire unit (wheel to wheel) redone professionally and it was $1200. Now that included swapping out the tired 4.56 and replacing it with a Richmond 3.91 gear set. The big problem develops when the car sits for a long time and the exposed portion of ring and pinion rust and become pitted. So if rebuild becomes necessary, consider changing ratio to more drivable ratio. (Actually, 3.91 gears were available as part of the "severe usage' package/parts.)
  • With cover off, spray brake-kleen to clean out all old grease, then replace the front pinion seal, new cover gasket, pull axles, new inner seals, clean and repack bearings, then new outer seals, fill rear with 80 or 85-140 gear lube and you will be ready to ride. You will not need deep pockets, as these DANA rears are tuff. Dale Cooper should have the parts you need. Walt.
