Water pump

Could be potential problem leading to engine running hotter than it should.

I just bought a rebuilt water punp for my newly purchased 308 engine. I was telling Perry Spring about it and he told me the Impellor should protrude out of the pump body. If not, there would be a cavitation problem inside the pump. I checked the Procedure Manual, and in bold print is a NOTE: IMPELLER MUST PROTRUDE .007 TO .017 BEYOND COVER FACE OF PUMP BODY. It is a good thing he told me about it because:

I called the supplier to ask if the pump was within specs. He was sure it was.

Before installing the pump I decided to remove the cover and check measurement. Not only did the impeller not protrude out, within specification, it was below the cover face of the pump body a loose .035 for an error of .042 to 052. That is alot of space for the water to swirel around not being pumped out of the pump.

The gasket thickness keeps the impeller from contacting the cover.

I contacted supplier and he was willing to make good. Not only with another pump but with the cover off to double check the impeller measurement. Mistakes happen. Double checking found the error before it could become a potential problem. It's great having HET members give out advice and HET suppliers who make good without hassels. Otherwise, I would have installed the pump none the wiser.

Just thought I would share another learnig experience.
Have a great day.

Great tip :cheer: . I mounted my pump on the plate and "soft" bolted it to the block and there was interference (pump face was grinding against plate). Thinking it was "slop" I was thinking of milling the plate where the pump contacted it. Now I will know better and yes the gaskets should prevent contact. This info should go on the HET stepdown webpage, but is it still actively maintained?

Adding another gasket or thicker gasket between pump and pump plate will take care of the problem. Measure gasket thickness and add enough to clear impellor but not too thick to aid casvitation.
