GOT ONE (finally)

Hey Guys I GOT ONE! :woohoo:
Been looking for a Big Boy since dirt was new and rocks were still soft. And what a find it was. '46 Big Boy, w/'52 Hornet Twin H motor, w/dual range hydro, spare front clip, New grill, reasonable interior, late Hornet front brakes w/ Hydro-vac power booster. Was able to start it up and drive it on the trailer and then up into the yard. Now the fun begins, starting with a 7X block and head the old boy had in the back room....Byron

    Bryon,
Congratulations! I've always like the look but the cab space is pretty small!
    Where are you from?

    Welcome to the madhouse!

I hope that what you bought is the one underneath...and not in the bed of the truck, LOL!.

Great news Brian, now the fun does begin! I know you will enjoy it. Keep us posted with your progress.
  • Brian... obviously with all the Hudson additions to your pickup I was previously owned by someone who appreciated the HUDSON heritage. Was it a local San Jose vehicle?

    Thanks for sharing.

Congratulation Byron on such a good find. My Dad had two PU's and I have a 47 PU.
It great to see another one.

  • Nice score Brian! What a great start!
  • Unfortunately the Big Boy cab space is about the same as my '48 & '49 Ford F-1's. And they are tight, but then I'm not traveling cross/country. Me and my auto menagerie live in San Jose CA....Byron
  • This old boy was building and racing Hudsons in their heyday, and has more rare goodies laying around than should be legal. He acquired this '46 Big Boy in '48. I'm still picking thru his pile. He must have a dozen various blocks laying around, like a kid in a candy store. I'm learning as fast as I can, with him teaching me, as what to acquire. fun/fun/fun...Byron
  • I got both, with the front clip in the bed being almost perfect. Between both I'll have a preminum rust free body, with only the wood bed to contend with....Byron

I got my wood kit for my truck from Perry Spring in Ontario, Ca. If you are interested his phone # is 909 460 0736. My old wood bed was so bad my foot broke thrugh when I stepped on it.

It's great you have spare PU fenders because the car fenders look similar but the conture is different where it meets the cowel and running board, because the cowel flares out at the bottom on cars.

I'm excited for you. Keep us posted on your progres please.

So what else comprises your "menagerie" ? Always interesting to know the length and breadth of an old car nuts eccentricity. LOL

Good for you! If you have the original seat back, it's thicker than it needs to be. Cut some springs and re-cover it so it tapers from your hiney to an inch or two at your shoulders and you'll have more room.

When you get time, send me your Name, address, and truck serial No and I'll add it to the other 850 or so trucks in our roster.

  • No problem, just click on my mug-shot with my 1910 Ford T, and my menagerie is under 'My Cars', and they are the more interesting of my collection. As you can see I'm quite diversified, with no room left. I've always heard that your hobbie will expand to the point of 'room available', so true.

  • The one major reason I just had to have this truck, was that it already had the mod's that I would have done to any other truck. And seeing that I'm an old hot-rodder at heart, this was a no-brainer. NOW....attached is a scan of the GOAL I'm going after. In my opinion, this is just drop-dead gorgeous, and was wondering if this 'American Art' piece might be affiliated with this forum....Byron

Here's a photo taken by Lee O'Dell that I ran in the White Triangle News, the Award-winning National Magazine of the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club. If you are not a member, send me your snail mail address and I'll send you a complimentary copy.

This truck was displayed at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California this year.

  • Hey SamJ:
WOW, that's quite a pickup. I guess I must be old school, as I want one that could be driven at least once a week. This white and yellow thing looks like a birthday cake. I'd be afraid to take it out of it's humidor and saran-wrap between shows.

Beautiful Truck... I this truck was built by Jim Haddon of Oak Harbor, Washington. Jim had been a member of the national HET club. The truck had a several page article in one of the custon truck magazines a few years back.

 Loved the birthday cake analogy. Looking at it again, you're absolutely right!

Guys say they'll drive 'em even if they're super tricked out, but that $20,000 paint jot has just gotta go through your mind every time. And I don't blame 'em- I wouldn't want to be scrapin' bugs off that thing, either.
  • A paint job like that is not for traveling, it's a do not touch job. My 53 was painted in 1996, cost $7,000 and was told drive it and just hose down and towel it off. It's been to Florida in the Love Bug Season and across the country in the grass hopper seasons, 11 trips across, San Francisco to Goshen, CT. And the paint is still like the day it was painted. Walt.

Do you recall the name of the magazine and the date. I bought that copy because of the truck and it disappeared days after buying it. I would like to get another copy of it. I was very taken by the looks of that truck and particularly the color. I even took it to my painter to show him what color blue I would like mine painted. As we looked at the picture together, it was difficult to determine what color blue it was, because of the lighting the color is not the same on all parts of the truck. I like that truck very much.
