Options for Painting your Hornet Dash

Rather than completely removing the dash to my 51 Hornet, I am considering masking it off and have it professionally sanded and painted in place. I know it sounds a bit lazy but I just want to spruce up the interior without hours of labor in removing and reinstalling the dash. I WOULD remove the painted interior trim pieces and have them redone outside the car.

Have any of you guys painted your dash WITHOUT removing it? Again, I'm not looking for a complete restoration, just to spruce the car up a bit. Thanks in advance for your opinions

I'm just thinking that you would have to mask the entire inside of the car to keep the overspray off the windows, seats, steering wheel, headliner, etc., etc. That overspray just wants to go everywhere.

    Not a stepdown Neils.

My wife and I, about 1969, did paint my Dads 46 Hudson PU dash inside the truck. Turned out very nice. We were newly weds and my Dad loaned us the truck because we were having alot of trouble with our 56 VW Kombi Bus at the time. Just our way of saying thank you Dad for letting us use the truck. Yes, we did mask everything before painting.

Removing the dash panel is time consuming, but not all that bad and well worth the effort. If you want to have it look just like the original leathergrain finish, send the pieces to Bill Gratkowsky in PA. He's the only one I've seen who can replicate that look exactly. Beautiful work. billgrains@verizon.net. Ads in Hemmings and others.

I had the dash out on my 52 Coupe and had all the interior pieces redone in the original style leatherette a couple years ago by Nick Alexander restorations here in So Cal. Don't think I want to go that far on my 51. Here is a pic of my 52 dash...
