What Grade Oil ?
I live in the Northeast and Usually like to drive my 54 hornet sedan regardless of season. From Aril to Sept I usually run Penziol Straight 30weight oil. However as the Temps drop I'm thinking to running a multi weight. Does anyone have any thoughts as to wether that would be harmful ? Also what about the detergent in alot of the multiweight oils today. Is that a problem ? I was thinking for running castrol 5-30 for the winter. Any thoughts ?

There was a thread on this some tme ago, with varying opinions. I use castrol GTX 10w40 in my 54s all year round, and have had no trouble. I also like to drive my cars all year round.

I wouldn't go lighter than 10W on a multi-viscosity oil. I've used 10-40 and 20-50 for years without any problems.0

I have been hearing loud humming coming from my speedo now that the temps have dropped. Once I've been driving for about 20min or so it goes away. Does anyone have any idea's about this0

Idea, yeah. Cold weather will make the metal contract and the cable inside the housing will start to rub "more" until it warms up, then expands enough so the cable isn't rubbing and making the humming noises. Probably just means you need to disassemble your cable and grease it.

Modern multi-grade oils are far superior than any straight grade oil, and the detergency is not a factor to consider as far as reliability or performance is concerned. No oil company is going to market a product that is going to damage you engine. I've run all my cars on Castrol GT for many years. Go ahead and change over.

My spedo screaming wasn't in the cable, it was in the head. I squirted some WD40 in it and it fixed it0

Hey Joe, where in the Northeast do you live?? I'm in southern Maine and have used 10W-40 in everything I own, including the odd Hudson, for years with no problems - winter or summer. And the winters here, even in Southern Maine, can be brutal at times.

Post 1976 Engines running on unleaded - what ever the manufacturer says (usually multi-viscosity 5-30w or 10-40w)
Pre 1976 Engines I run straight 30w in street motors - 40 or 50w for high performance.

You know Dan, this must be either our generation or just "old wives tale" that's been handed down, because I grew up with the exact info you gave with the exception of the "Pre-'76". I always knew it as the pre-72, probably due to the addition of the regulated smog equipment.
