I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the 262 powerdome uses a single action or dual action mechanical fuel pump. The last owner took off the stock fuel pump and put on a electric pump that doesnt want to work for more than a couple miles so I want to put back a stock one but need to know which one to buy and where. Thanks for any input. Frank

Either one would be correct. The dual action was an option. It helps the wipers work better.....sorta. There are a few NOS and rebuilt on Ebay right now ranging from $75-$130.

You can also use a pump from a 232 or 258 AMC 6cyl. It's a bolt on but you have to reconfigure the lines, especially the one going to the carb. The outlet points straight down so you need to make up a line that has a U bend in it so the line comes straight up. We've used several of these and they work just fine. BTW, it's a single action pump.
  • Thanks for the input. It was very helpful

As mentioned there are options to go back to a mechanical pump. Be wary of NOS pumps as their diaphrams are not necessarily compatible with modern fuels.
You may want to keep the electric for priming or overcoming vapor lock and you do haveissues with it.
This sounds as though the electric pump screens are clogged not completely but have a significant amount of estriction. the pump overheats and shuts down but given some cool down time will work again. you need to clean those plus you should have a filter between the pump and tank. also the electric should have been mounted near the tank.
  • Go to any auto store and ask for a fuel pump #6737, it fits AMC from 1972 to 1983, 258 engines, and it's a sealed unit and made for today's gas. You must have the gasket pack between pump and block, 1/4 to 5/16 thick. You must also put fuel filters before the pump, as it sounds like you have dirt in your gas tank, and that is blocking the electric pump and will block the fuel pump also. Walt.
  • Forgot to mention, cost around $30.00 and $5.00 for the gasket pack. You would also need the gasket pack for the original pump. Walt.
  • thanks for your help. it is appreciated. Frank
  • Walt,is there anything I need to know when installing this pump.ie engine in certain position or whatever. Thanks for your help
  • Outside of making the line, pump to carb, just get bolts that when you install through pump and gasket pack they stick out 1/2 inch. I sell the gasket pack, $5.00 plus $6.00 shipping. Just make sure the cam is on the low side and pump arm goes under the cam. Walt.
  • do you have a web site that I can order the gasket pack from ? Thanks for your help,. It has been invaluable. Frank
