generator for 29 essex super six

HI

My dad recently got a generarot rebuilt and it is running hot when he ataches a red wire to the generator. He got it rebuilt by some co in winnipeg and am not sure of the wiring scheme of it there seems to be no ground for it or is ther esupposed to be..please understand that I ma putting this up for my dad who is 76 yrs old...he loves his essex so thought i would help him out any directions or assiatnce would be greatly appreciayed

  • Make sure the battery is in the correct position, positive ground negative to generator. Must have the manual for the car as some 29 Hudsons were negative ground. Walt.

    Ensure that the generator is correctly polarised.

    You probably have a third-brush generator with a cutout. You should polarize the generator by connecting a jumper wire between the two connections on the cutout for a split second. Do this before starting the vehicle. It doesn't matter if your car is positive or negative ground. If your generator is not polarized correctly it will get hot and burn out because it's in series with the battery when the cutout is closed. Also check the output on the ammeter. If it's putting out too many amps it will get hot and burn out as well. You udjust the output by moving the third brush.
