Walt and Margaret start their cross country trip today, 7-13, with a great stop in Oklahoma City. Hope to meet a lot of friends there. Our trip starts from San Francisco and in the rain. Hudson doesn't mind the rain as the electric wiper work great. Alex, see you there. Walt.

Sail on, sail on, oh ship of Hudson. Y'all travel safe and we'll see you in OKC the 13th. That is if my Merry Oldsmobile doesn't blow up before I get there.
Not to worry - if all else fails I'll just take a Greyhound and call somebody to come get me at the bus station in OKC. :silly:

If you need a ride Alex give me a call. We are expecting to be there Sunday evening. Utah to SantaFe and along Route 66 to OKC. As you see us on the road Honk and Wave....
  • Am now to old to carry a camera, but I have friends coming that will not leave home without it. He's coming in Wednesday of next week so I'll talk to him. Walt.
  • Had a good ride todaay, only covered about 285 miles, am now in for the night, 10am to 3:30pm, and tomorrow must cover 330 miles. To reach OK Sunday night, 1700 miles for us, short trip. Had to turn the air condition right after we turned on routw 5. We are in Bakerfields, CA and will fill in tomorrow night where we stop. Filled the tank in SF and will fill in the morning and let you know the gallons. 101 was 60 to 65 and route 5 was 70 to 75, and the police were out in force. Walt.

  • 7-14-11. Left Bakerfields this morning at 6:30am, filled the tank and hit the road, at 10am, we were in Barstow, had another breakfast, filled the tank and set sail for Kingman, AZ. Off the road at 3:30pm, had dinner, signed into a Comfort Inn and will rest for tomorrow's trip. Left my gas mileage and gallons in the car and will do it tomorrow, to hot to go outside, it's been a very hot trip out side, 90 plus but Hudson air keep the car at 60 degrees. Engine temp stayed at a little over center, about 170, and no problems with vapor lock, thanks to my thermostat kit, fuel return line and the pusher fan in front of the radiator. Walt&Margaret

  • We are in for the. Night, Amarillo, TX and what a trip to this point. Temp 103 to 107, new cars on the side of the road as well as tractor trailers with their hoods up. The problem is the gas boils in the tank and they have 10 per cent alcohol in the mix, and the water separates and blocks the carbs. I discovered a way to over come this problem, when you feel the car starting to run uneven, pull right into a station, and fill with 88 not 86 octane, this is cool gas from the ground and cools your gas tank. Keep right on driving. Tomorrow, Sunday we only have about 250 to go and Oklahoma City here we come. 1400 miles to this point. Walt & Margaret
  • We made it to Oklahoma City and into the hotel after 1675 miles and 5 days with temps in the 103 to 107 range. Our Hudson made the trip and never let us down. With the weather reports that the country will still be above average, we will head back to S F weather and the 50 degree temp. No cross country this year. Walt.
  • Made Oklahoma City after 1,675 miles, in temps 103 to 107 and Hudson made it with no problems. With the news that the heat wave is across the whole country, we will head home when we leave here. Margaret doesn't want to take any chances on our health at our ages. To overcome the heat, I stop about every 75 to 100 miles, get a cold drink and put cold gas in the tank to keep the gas from boiling in the tank. Walt and Margaret.

Were you able to run the air conditioner most of the time?

I think you're wise to head back to the coast- things can go south in a hurry, if you have a breakdown in that heat, in the middle of nowhere. And as my wife said once when we were on the "trip from he11", "I thought this was supposed to be a vacation, not an ordeal."

Just as you are in San Franscisco, we're having the coolest (and wettest) July on record here in the Pacific Northwest. Daytime temps are running 10 degrees below normal, and I'm still waiting for my hay guy to cut my hay. Normally, it would have all been in the barn 2 weeks ago.
  • The air condition was always turned on after 1hour on the road and turned off when we stopped for the night. The car is parked in a Handy-cap spot and has not been moved. To hot to even walk around. In the morning I will set up my tent with help from Greg and lay out a few parts I hauled to this point. It will be nice to lightened the Hudson a little. Margaret is so happy, friends from CT arrived this noon and now off to the pool they are going. 80 degree water will feel nice she claims. Walt&Margaret
