Bellhousing ID questions
After finding the original bellhousing that came with the 37 engine is different than the spare one I have, can anyone give me insight into the application of each one? The silver one is the one I had and was going to use. Notice the difference in the clutch shaft- linkage

The pretty one is for '41-'47, which does not have the "lockout" linkage to the transmission that prevents shifting until the clutch is disengaged. You can use it on the '37 if you don't want to have that feature. Just leave that linkage off.0

I've got a 'lingerin suspicion' that the lockout mechanism was developed to prevent a mal-adjusted electric hand from wreckin the tranny.
Maybe this is where the misnomer 'Terriblepain' came from to describe one of Hudson's finer automobiles.
Anybody know?0 -
Good theory, Josh, but I see there was an interlock mechanism beginning in '30, so evidently that wasn't the case.
There was an advantage Hudson likely never considered though ... on the '38 H8 I took to the drag strip a few times in 1956, I set the interlock to release just at the point where the clutch was fully disengaged. That way, on a 1st to 2d shift, for example, I could push on and even slightly bend the shift lever toward the 2d gear position without worrying over its popping out of gear, then when it was time to shift, very quickly pop the clutch in and back out out ... Bam ... it was in 2d gear. The fast gear change was noticeable. On one occasion I walked back to the pit area from the refreshment stand and there were two legs sticking out from under the Hudson. It was a guy who was looking to see how I got the Hydramatic in it. LOL.
