Input shaft seal Hydramatic

Ok, after an embarassing amount of time spent driving with a leaky transmission, it's time to get it fixed. I've called a few shops who said they would rather not touch it for fear of breaking a hard to find unit. I have the number of a few old-timers locally hwo have been suggested to me, but have not called them yet. Thought I would get your guy's opinion also.

Input shaft seal is leaking like the metal a sieve was stamped out of. Just been adding when needed. Tired of lifting the carpet everytime i drive the car.
How hard is the seal replacement? I assume the tranny has to be removed to do it. Once the tranny is out, how should I go about removing the old seal? The Toris should be pretty self-explainatory.

I have the Hydra-Matic manual, but havent really read through it yet. Any tips or trick I should know before tackling this one? Anything the manual doesn't go over, but should do anyway?

Thanks for your time guys,

Here's a little tech thread w/pics a buddy of mine did on a 60 Olds and the last comment references the Hudson dual range.

Thanks, almost makes it sound like something I could do.

I bought the seal a few years ago along with a Toris gasket. Should I have some sort of o-ring too?

I really need to go out to the shop and start digging through the manual i guess.
  • if it is the rear seal just remove the drive shaft and remove the seal and replace with a new one. it sounds like it is the front seal from your message, and if it is check the transmission manual and find out what a job it is. taking the transmission out is quite a job (I just did it and do not want to do it again) therefore you might consider swapping your tranny with a rebuilt one from Gus Souisa which be a better (although expensive) option because if the seal is bad other things might be bad so you do not want to take the tranny out again. BTW the rear of the engine must be blocked either from below or from a bar attached at the top. Also if the tranny is to be removed the car has to be high enough to get it out from under. good luck
