Step-down Ornament surround.
I have just replaced the grille ornament in my '53 Hornet, with a new one from K-Gap, and it looks great, after the old cracked and faded one. However, I notice a countersunk screw hole in the very top of the surround, and there is nothing for anything to screw into. Am I missing something - perhaps a bracket of some sort?
Step-Downs, are pretty thin on the ground here, so I can't compare with another car. Can anyone enlighten me please, or post a picture of the area. Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff,
Could it be bracket that holds the light for the grille ornament?

Yup, that's what it's for alright!0

The light behind the ornament is in a housing held on by three screws. The hole that I have nothing in is a countersunk one, and definitely not linked to the light surround.0

There's a small piece that covers the bulb access. It attaches to the housing and upper grill.0

You are correct. It depends on what year you have as to which metal piece you use. 51 has it's own design. 52-3 have a different one. They then attach to the tie panel with two sheet metal screws after attaching to the top of the ornament holder with the countersunk hole.GrimGreaser wrote:There's a small piece that covers the bulb access. Geoff,
Here is picture of one from a 1950. If I can find one for 52/3, I will send it to you.

What I really need to know is what goes in the hole at the very top of the fitting, said hole being barely visible in the picture.0

Geoff, Its a short countersunk sheetmetal screw that screws into the top of the small sheet metal piece that attaches to the tie panel. It looks like a very short drywall screw.0

Hope they're clear enough...0 -
Sorry, Geoff. I thought you meant the piece that holds the light. I had one boxed up and ready to mail today. I will check and see if I have one of the other pieces. I know I have 2 NOS ones, I just have to make sure they are 52/3. I will get back to you.0

Thank you all for your help. I figured there was something should go in the hole, so now I know. If Dave can't find something I'll try make one up, now I know what it looks like.
