If you would like to experience a nostalgic journey across America in a 1951 Hudson read “The Long Ride” by Charles Woodruff. Charlie puts you in the seat next to him as he guides his Hudson along roads that are less traveled. This is a great story of his love for a car and country as he traverses 23 states driving to and from the meet in Spokane in 2010.

Is this the whole book about his visit to all 48 contiguous states with this car since he's had it? Where do we buy it?
I don't think anyone else has done this with a Hudson.
  • Check with Walt, his 53 has covered all 48 states and the highest points in each state as well as across Canada, east to west on the Queens Highway and all of Vancouver. 12 years and 138,000 miles later.

When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale Florida, there was a guy in my neighborhood with a 40 coupe that I heard had covered 49/50 states. I think his name was Dale. I saw his car before and after his trip to Alaska, and it needed a complete repaint when he returned. The dirt roads took its toll.

Charlies book, The Long Ride, is the story of his trip to Spokane in 2010 - basically. It's not just "well, I drove from here to there today...........". He puts forth his thoughts on the way the country has changed over the years, he observations about life in general and a damn good road trip in particular.

His book is a travelogue covering 23 states in 22 days in his venerable 1951 Hudson Brogham, along with completeing driving the car thru all the lower 48 states, which has taken him some 20 years. Charley is not a professional author and the book reflects that. But it is well written and readable. Charley sent me an advanced copy and you can be sure I got a copy at the OKC national where he was selling them. This should be on every HET fan's bookshelf.

You can reach Charlie at HETcbwoodruff@hotmail.com (drop the HET). For a $20 bill it's a great story and well worth reading. Get yours today.

I might have known, Walt. We get bits and pieces, but a book about it would be nice if you had time.

BTW, if you can get hold of 'LOOKING BACK' by Harold M. Gilbert, it's a great book about all the cars he's had etc, and his mechanic friend, Walt, hauled most of his stuff home with a 49 Hudson with a trailer, sometimes two in tandem. Incidentally, Walt also had a 29 Hudson B&S Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton. One of the 16 built. Not sure where it went, but the book is a great read. Lots of pictures.
