HUDSON 7X aluminum HEAD, "7X-309390"
I noticed a post from Rudy to Ivan on 8 Nov, 2010, and part of it is as follows:
"The engine which contained this head was bought in 1953 from Willis O Donahue, Hudson Dealership in El Paso Texas. The cost for the engine was $385.00 as a long block. The engine consisted of a block ,Head, oil pan, front timing cover which was part numbered 7X Engine #C-309395 and contained Camshaft—309395. This engine was installed in Harry’s 49 4-door Hudson by George Brazill who worked for Willis at the time. For an extra $70.00 they installed a Twin H set-up Along with a set of homemade headers made by Harry. George later become an engine builder specializing in Hudson powered Dirt track cars."
I noticed that camshaft part # and it looked familiar, so I contacted a gent who I know who claims to have a Hudson 7X RACING HEAD made of aluminum; it is marked "Hudson", "308" and "7X-309390". He claims it is an original head like Hudson used on the NASCAR circuit to win, BIG-time. e.g., in 1952 I understand that Hudson won all NASCAR races, except one.
Was it a 232 iron head or a 308 aluminum head that Hudson NASCAR-raced?
Did Hudson actually race a "308" girdled aluminum head and a "232" iron head?? Seems a little confusing to me.
I wonder what this 7X-309390 head could be worth world-wide on ebay and just how rare is it? ..... $ _____.oo
Any one know how many of these 7X-309390 aluminum heads were produced?
Hudsonly,
Bob

the 7X engine came from the factory, if sold as a "long block" as opposed to a "short block", with an iron "232" head.
The best all around factory cam was the #311040.
The first '54 Hornets came from the factory with the so-called "flat lobe" cam which proved to be a timing chain "eater" & thus frequently replaced.
I bought a '50 C8 conv. in the late '60s which had a "long block" 7X engine as the original owner, from whom I got it, blew a heater hose in '53-4, overheated the car going up mts. in no. Calif. & cracked the block. As it was a C8 there were no interchangeable parts so he got it with the 7X exh. manifold as well. When I bought the car the engine had about 10K on it, car about 40K.
If you look in the parts books in the "Severe Usage" section you'll see several different cams offered, the last being the #311040 I believe.0
