i am not to that point yet but i was just wondering what everyone used for a clutch alignment tool? i saw one for sale on the 21st century hudson site or something. anyone know of something i can buy, something that interchanges, or have a old junk mainshaft for sale?

Dr. Doug has a simple and inexpensive one. I lost mine somewhere so am using an old front mainshaft, but Doug's works very nicely.0

i think you answered your own question
Could order one from us..at $12.50 they are quite expensive, and you would have to wait 2-3 days delievery through USPS0 -
If I understood right, this is to engage the gear, right ? Usually I do it visually but you have to be very accurate, you can also take dimensions (internal diameter of the clutch plate and internal diameter of the crankshaft, length : see mainshaft) and get a machine shop make you one but for 12.50 I would rather buy one than get it machined0

i'm sorry i didn't mean to imply the $12.50 was too high or shipping would take too long, i have never ordered anything off the 21st century hudson site and had no experience with it. i had saved the site to my favorites on my computer a while back and remembered they had one available. that was the only reason i mentioned it.
i have a lathe and kicked the idea around of making one out of brass or aluminum, but like terraplane33 sayes at that price- is it worth it? i now have it taken care of, thank you all for your help.0 -
I think Russ was just "pulling your leg" on the cost & shipping. Have two left, then we will have more made.

The eye is a wonderful tool when it has something to compare to. You can easily center the clutch disk within a few thousandths of an inch, which is well within the tolerance needed to engage the spline in the disk.
Engaging the pilot bearing needs to be a little closer, but with the bell housing lined up on some long bolts, disengage the clutch with a pry-bar to engage the pilot bearing.
How many thousandths in an inch? As one guy said, 'millions of 'em'.0
