Old Reliable

Don't you just love it when the "daily driver" lets you down and your Hudson comes to the rescue? My beetle's battery went dead and the Hudson jumped in and took me to work on Sunday. (Although I didn't get much done with all the folks stopping by to comment on the car) I've owned my '49 for 37 years and can always count on it when needed. I love my Hudson!

I well remember a morning in 1952 when extremely cold weather made my day. Dad's '41 Chevy wouldn't turn over fast enough to start, so he climbed into "Mom's and my" '37 Terraplane ... it cranked right up and off went Dad to work. I loved it !!!
  • Yup, last winter I had to drive my '49 because the '91 buick was running with a high idle and with everything me and my parents did to it we couldn't get it to run right...I finally HAD to take it to a shop and get a new computer for it. Stupid computers..LOL.
The Hudson runs well but the heater wasn't hooked up but the bare metal floor pans did help (a little) and learning to drive a stick in snow and ice was interesting..luckily we had a mild winter.
But she started every time and I took her to our christmas meet an hour and a half away from me with the kids bundled up with their blankets and a slightly frozen driver...my toes eventually thawed out.

I had a old reliable- 1950 comm. 8 sedan which I put a 54 hornet engine in with a 232 head. Boy would it run. Drove it to work for a couple of years before I junked it. Sat outside and always started regardless of the weather. The block had a cracked valve seat you could stand a pencil up in and the suspention was worn out to say the least. It took half a revolution of the steering wheel to catch up with the wheels. By todays standards it was very restorable but, I had to many Hudsons and my new wife told me I had to get ride of some. We called it the "Bomber". My b rother had a three year old 1960 Chev. Impala hardtop. I ask him if he would follow me to the junk yard and pick me up. We had about 20 miles to go and on the way we started racing. I out ran the 60 chev for top end. I told him afterwards I think we junked the wrong car. I guess you could say the Bomber went to the great highway in the sky in a blaze of glory. LOL

That '49 beauty is a magnet for tatooing prospects! Did your business spike that day? Maybe it should be parked there more often...slim
  • Thanks Slim! The car did draw a lot of attention alright.... But nobody asked for a "Hudson" sleeve or backpiece..... Go figure...

Two weeks ago my son's 944 wouldn't go. My wife lent him her car,..and took mine. I got to drive the Wasp all week till parts came in for the 944! I was a little worried about the heat (100+ all week), but the 52 came through with flying colors.
