Texas fires

Wondering if any of our Texas members are in any danger from the wildfires. RL Chilton are you OK? My daughter who lives only about 7 miles south of you (North San Antonio) posted on Facebook that they were asked to evacuate. I visited you last year and knowing your area I was concerned.

Didn't realize the fires were only 30-35 miles away.

Dropped an email to Russ Chilton and family - so far they appear to be in no danger just north of San Antonio.

In the true Hudson spirit they are going to bag up toys for kids who lost theirs in the fires. Way to go - a tip of Aunt Hesters bonnet to your thoughtfullness.

Yes, Texas is on fire, literally this time. No rain so far this year.

Thanks for the concern, Jim. The Stone Oak area you mentioned was getting bad, so a lot of houses were evacuated. Worst has been the Austin/Bastrop area, as there has been a loss of more than 1000 homes now.

So far (knock on wood), my immediate area is unscathed.

There were 19 NEW fires in Texas just yesterday. Closest to me was NW of San Antonio burning 250+ acres at Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley but NO homes this time - about 40+ miles away.

The state is tinder dry, deadly extreme drought. I literally have hoses ready around my house and car barn.

3.7 million acres of Texas have burned so far in the year

And there is a company in So. Calif. that has 40 tanker planes ready to fly but our federal government does not like their maintainence record keeping and won't let them fly to help. And the biggest tanker in the country?... they can't find a pilot qualified to fly it. So Texans will do the jobs themselves.
  • With the Bastrop, Steiner Ranch fire which is about 20 miles Northwest of me, and Spicewood Fire 20 miles west, I am nervous as hell. I live in the country, Southwest of Austin.
All the grass has turned into straw. Nothing green. Only the old Oak trees with deep roots are green. If it ever does rain my one acre will turn into mud city, with all the straw being washed away. All hoses are at the ready, but if something happens, cigarette, BBQ, by the time you get to the faucet to turn the water on, and get to where the fire is, I feel you will already be behind the curve. Cedar trees and tall grass in the back part of the acre...Had a little flare up about a week ago just 1 mile away from here, but the fire Dept got to it before it did any damage. Got lucky..

My friend and long-time HET Club Member Bob Mathews lost his family home and contents in a very recent California Fire. Their ranch has been in the family for at least 100 years. Ranch is located in the Cajon Pass (Hwy 15 north of San Bernardino.) I don't know if they lost any cars, but I assume so, because one garage was attached to the house.
