Hello,I have a 53 Hudson super wasp with a 262 hydro, I'm buying a 308 twin h power engine with a hydro out of another 53 super wasp and I was wondering if the rear end gearing would be the same on a 262. Reason being is if I should buy the drive shaft and rear end as well.

Thank you

It depends, the 52 could have a Hudson or a Spicer rear end as they changed sometime during the year. The Hudson Diff. has a drop out center section and a welded on rear cover, the Spicer has an integral gearset an a bolt on rear cover, 53 would be a Spicer. Originally there was a small sheet metal tag under one of the lower left hand cover bolts that had the # of teeth on the pinion and ring gears, if it's still there they should be 3.08 to 1 ratios, the Hudson rear end had no tag but A/T cars were usually 3.58 to 1.

So welded cover is Hudson reared, bolted cover is spicer rearend. What about the Dana? So my ultimate question is, if I swap the 262 with the 308, will the reared setups wether it be 3.07:1 or 3.58:1 work? Is one more desirable or suited more for the 308? Which is better for driving? Because my friends 60 f100 has farm gears and on the freeway 65 is pushing the motor and it's a v8.

Dana and Spicer are the same thing. One's a subsidiary of the other.
  • the 3.07 will be better for highway driving and the 3.58 better for around town and a faster takeoff.

  • I think that info is in the mechanical procedure book ?
