47 Hudson motor change

Can anyone provide information regarding the installation of a 262 into a 47

sedan. Do the motor mounts need to be relocated? Does the transmission

crossmember need to be replaced with a stepdown version ?

Any other tidbits would be most appreciated.

You do have to re-locate the motor mounts to further forward in the chassis, and you will have to move the radiator forward. The rear mount is the same, and the transmission bolts right up.

    Geoff.
  • Geoff,

Thanks for the response. How far forward? Any problems encountered with

moving the radiator forward and the hood still closing properly.?

Is the preferred method to cut/grind where the original mounts are welded then drop

the engine and trans in and mark the new location for the mounts or just by measuring?

Any other do's and don'ts you can think of?

    Thanks Again

Brad I have a '47 Sedan. If you want to drop that 262 in and the car was originally an 8 cylinder you do not need to move the motor mounts. It also depends what trans you're using......3 spds will bolt right in but you have to make other ulterations if you're running a hydramatic. The big nut on the steering arm interferes with the flange casting part of the block.....notch out the block with a high speed angle grinder do not shave the big steering nut! If you have a 3spd the spedals should bolt in too......however the shift lever does not and will have to be altered. Also the stock speedo cable doesn't go right in the step-down trans. You need to trim the driveshaft if you have overdrive....you may need to if you don't, not sure....... You should be able to keep the stock radiator.

    Hope that help some.
  • I have seen this done on several of the trucks and cars but I don't have all the details.

Maybe someone here can fill in what I am missing so here it goes:

    1) The radiator is mounted further foward and still clears the hood. You have to make a new radiator mount and that is really pretty easy compaired to some of the other changes needed.

    2) Use the radiator holes for the factory Bid Six engine motor mounting plate but you have to heat and bend the right side of the plate foward some to work. I do not know exactly how much to bend this but it looked like under 1".

    3) Use 4 rubber round donut motor mounts with one between the frame and engine mounting plate with the other on top of the plate with hardened bolts, flat washers, lock washers & hex nuts mounting the plate thru the radiator holes. I do not know exactly which donuts to use for this.

    4) The stearing arm, nut and shaft will interfer with the lower left side of the block and the reinforcement ribs on the 308 Hornet engine and the lower left side of the other

wide block big sixes. You have to gring the block for clearance here but I have seen other mods done like trimming the shaft & nut for clearance. That kinda scares me & I don't recommend doing that. I am unaware of other clearance issues here so the other guys may want to add something here.

    5) The Big Six bellhousing mount will fit the factory transmission mount like Geoff said above so the transmission is easy to do. Any single lever transmission will work but the ones used in the stepdowns with overdrive had some of the overdrive specific parts on the opposite side compaired to the 42-47 factory single lever transmissions. You might have some clearence issues but the only problems I was told about was with Overdrive and Drivemaster. You had to use a 42-47 single lever overdrive with the 42-47 Drivemaster. This may not be a problem in your case.

Dual Lever transmissions will need the shifter linkage changed on the steering column to add the correct double lever assembly. I don't know if the Stepdown parts will fit here without modifications.

It would be nice to see this completed by some of the other Hudson nuts and then make it "sticky" or saved at the top of the post so anybody can access this easily. Maybe even add the same information for putting a Big Six into a Jet for us that dream of building a sleeper...

    Hope this helps

When the 254 eight was used, the radiator mounted on the front cross-member with a couple of brackets.

The 262 block is exactly 2 inches shorter than the eight, but the motor mounts are in the same place.

The radiator mounts you have to make should mount in the cross member, but move the radiator back 2 inches or make a fan shroud.
  • The 47 currently has a 6 (212 I guess) so it sounds like the motor mounts and the radiator mount will need to be moved up 2 inches or so. The grinding of the block scares me a little but I would also rather stay away from the steering nut.

I also agree with PaceRacer50, that it would be great to keep this thread going and with everyones expertise develop a quality step by step post on how to do this

    type of changeover.

Many thanks to all who have responded.

BTW, the 254 and 262 will use the frame holes used for the radiator in the 212 configgeration.
