OD or just Drivemaster?
I going to post this here for you all to see. This is the rear of my tranny.

Is this thing on the rear of the tranny just part of the drivemaster system or is it an overdrive unit?

Okay, nobody seems to recognize this, but I've had another look underneath. Wires come out of the small "oil filter" lookin' thing and one goes to the driver's side of the tranny and other wires go up to the drivemaster unit atop the engine.
So, it appears that this is just a Drivemaster unit, but no OD. Correct me guys if I'm wrong.

The transmission picture shown does NOT have an overdrive attached to it.

if that thing sticking out the side has a rubber boot on it it would be the od governor. sure looks like one.0

Sure you don't have the clutch-only Vacumotive unit?
If so, the thing is the governor which prevents automatic clutch disengagement when in high gear at speeds over 20 mph
There is a good treatise on the unit with pics of the governor in the back of the Hudson Mech Procedures Manual for 42-47.0 -

The only thing I can tell you folks is that the original owner paid extra for the Drivemaster option and the Drivemaster on/off switch is in the dash and the Drivemaster emblem is on the trunk lid. There is a big coffee can looking thing that mounts over the engine with wires coming from that "boot" thing mounted to the rear of the tranny and some other wires coming out of some solenoid below the front of the canister over the engine (Dan had posted some pics I sent him on some earlier thread-don't remember which one though).
My manual says the Drivemaster is basically supposed to give you the option of automatically shifting the car (Drivemaster on) or manually shifting (with the Drivemaster shut off). I believe it does use some kind of governing since shifting automatically seems to be done by letting your foot off the gas pedal.
Seems like a much too complicated set up and I'd be curious how well it even worked and how rare the set up was or do most guys just toss them in the trash!
Beyond that.......I have no clue! :-)

I believe that Drivemaster did not have OD capability, but Supermatic did (basically Drivemaster w/ OD). That is what my '50 manual says anyway.0

Fellas...
Jay asked a question... part of the drivemaster or overdrive... when I answered the transmission is not equipped with Overdrive, I should have continued and said... the picture you have posted is of a Hudson three speed transmission with a DRIVEMASTER Governer attached. The Hudson Drive - Master instuction set shows a similar picture. Looking at the posted picture, there is no overdrive housing attached to the transmission.

i too do not see an overdrive unit on the back of your transmission so i think its a DRIVEMASTER Governer also0

As Ken has pointed out, this transmission is definitely not an overdrive one. The object in question is a govenor switch for the drivemaster.
