I had been told that the rear car fenders fit if you have the
filler piece between box and fender. Can anbody verify this?

I believe that is not correct. At least, not so fast. You could start with a car fender. But you need the filler piece(as you said), the mounting flange, which is a seperate piece of thicker steel. Then you need to form a Pittsburgh type seam to put the sheet metal pieces together. Trim the car fender and bend the flange where it will meet the truck bed. Weld that on, punch the holes in the mounting flange. Fill the square holes that mounted the three trim pieces that were for the car, if it had them.
....then the car fender should fit. I think.:)0 -
You may be in luck. This ad was in the Nov/Dec issue of Vintage Truck

Aren't truck full cut wheel opening and cars not or is that just 41-47?0

I think that's mostly correct. But the difference would not be between commercial and passenger, I don't think. Example: Butler book, 1940, page 250, top left. A delivery van/panel truck with the small wheel opening. Why?
I believe the difference is in the mounting. If the fender was bolted to a vertical surface it had the large wheel opening. So all trucks.
If the fender bolted to a horizontal surface, it could be large or small.
Since we're talking about trucks, I would say '40 to '47 trucks all had the large wheel opening.:)0 -
