B) hey its me again, just wondering, I saw a picture from auburn of an old stocker, it had 387ci on the hood. I was wondering how they get that. I have figured every way I can think of,can't come up with that ci. maybe i am missing something?

  • Had to be an AMC engine, as they had 327 and 343 CID's. Walt.
  • Walt; thanks I do not know the year of the motor, so that makes scense. I figured every combo I could think of, could not come up with 387.

I remember that race car and I thought for sure it had a Hudson big 6 in it. I talked with that guy for awhile -very interesting. Maybe Jack Miller would have a picture of it, since it was parked next to him. Also, maybe Vince Schoenberger.

There a couple of photos of this car in the Sept/Oct 2008 issue of the WTN...the Auburn meet report. (I'm at work, so don't have a photo here to post). I seem to recall that the car was Hudson-powered...maybe a miscalculation on the owner's part?
  • I found out how theu got it, it's a 7/8" strocker. here is some pictures.
  • The owners name is Buddy Bardwell from New Hampshire. He has raced this car for 50 plus years in several different configurations. It has been Hudson powered fro a long time. He claims(with a wink & a nod) that he has an even larger displacement hornet 6 under the bench in his garage.
The cylinder head & intake manifold are offenhauser pieces and they have to Hudson name cast into them so he can run them legally in the vintage races.

I had the privilege of retaining Buddy for my "drinking buddy" at the Auburn meet. He can speak for himself if he frequents the forum, but what I remember him telling me about the car is that it is on a '54 (I believe) Chevrolet chassis, with a Ford body. He said that at the time he started racing, the rules specified that the body and engine make had to be the same, so he was running a Ford flathead. I believe he said that the rules changed in the 60s permitting him to run the Hudson. It is running an old crackerbox Ford transmission with no gears in it, straight through.
