new hudson owner

I want everyone to welcome Bob a new Hudson owner. He just bought a 52 Hornet Sedan and may need some help on finding parts and mechanical procedures. Im trying to get him to join HET.

  • Thanks, everyone. I've got a Membership form printed off already!!!! Now I get to repair some brake hydraulics!!! What do you all think of converting to silicone brake fluid?? It has worked well on my 1970 AMX and I want to try it also on my 1960 Metropolitan.

    It's worked well for me also, but you need to flush all the old fluid out of the lines and I suggest rebuilding all wheel and master cyl and replacing the flex hoses. Everything's available!
  • Yes, I think replacing it all would be wise. The old rubber hoses can't be real fresh now!! Who are some of your preferred suppliers for brake parts??

    I replaced my system with silicone maybe 20 years ago and haven't looked back.

    Only possible problem might be with the stoplight switch in the Step-Downs. I'm told by some, that the silicone can somehow past the seals. My 1937 switch is mechanical (not part of the hydraulic system at all) so no problem for me. Maybe someone else can enlighten you on this potential problem (or lack thereof!).

The latest issue covers the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club national meet in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma this past July.

    If you use silicone brake fluid, besides what everyone else is saying, I would also recommend that you use all modern rubber (hoses, wheel cylinder cups, etc.). Some of the NOS stuff (that was manufactured long ago) will not hold up with silicone brake fluid.

  • Walt here. For all your brake needs contact Norm Blavkmer at 909-984-5544 he has all new modern material. Forget rebuilding the old parts if you want to use silicone brake fluid. You also must flush out the steel brake lines good using BRAKE-KLEEN AND AIR. These brakes have to be adjusted correctly along with the secondary system. Try to borrow WALT'S TECH TIP BOOKS, go to volume one, page six, and read the set up. If you want a set of my books, mail a check for $41.00 for volume one and two.     If you don't have or want to buy Brake Kleen, Isopropyl alcohol with air pressure works fine too. You can buy it just about anywhere (Walmart, etc.). It costs under $1.00 for a pint. Try to get at least the 96% purity.

    Welcome aboard Bob!!!! Nickle for nickle I think the HET club is one of the best - no, I don't think ---- I know it's the best around. It's really people with cars, rather than cars with people. I've been agitating folks in this club for 42 years :P and haven't regretted a moment of it.

    If you need manuals go to http://hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm - there's a total nut case - I know him well - in the club building an online HET library to supplement the regular library at that URL. On the 1948-1954 shelf there's a 1948-1952 shop manual, a 1948-1954 Group Parts book and a 1952 group parts book, among other items. You can also find a complete set of 1949-1954 Service Merchandiser magazines - lots of good stuff between the pages.

    If you scrounge around, you may well be able to find the wheel cylinders, hoses, and master cylinder locally. OTOH it is a great thing to patronize our Hudson parts suppliers. One thing you will need help with is front brake shoes. They are peculiar to Hudson, 49-53 Pontiac, and some Oldsmobiles. You may be told that other shoes will interchange but they WON'T.
