Play in Door hinges

How much play in the door hinges is too much? I removed the doors off my 52 Hornet last night. I can wiggle the hinges that attach to the pillars a little bit by hand. by a little I mean .5 mm to 1mm up and down as measured at the end of the pillar hinge. But this little play would be amplified greatly by the width of the door by the time it reaches the striker plate.

Its almost like that pillar hingle hole is hogged out a little bit allowing the pillar hinge itself to rock back and forth. the pin has no play side to side or on the door side as far as I can tell. the doors needed to be slammed shut to close prior to being removed. though i didnt try Walts way to adjust them before hand.

How much play is too much? Whats a good remedy for the play? I have the doors off and want to fix and issues before reassembling.

thanks

Brad

  • The hinge bolted to the lower body should have no play what so ever. Check the lower body to see if it is rusted, this will cause play. Body work must then be done. Walt.

There is up and down play about .5mm-1mm where my thumb and forefinger are holding the hinges as the door is off. the Pillar mounts are solid as are the rockers. So any play at all is unacceptable? any suggestions on a drill bit/ reamer size and replacement pins?

remove hinge from car place in vice and drive out old pin with hammer and punch.find if pin or hinge is problem. replace pin if that is problem. if pin doesnt show being promblem you can get a size bigger piece of rod and drill hinge pieces out to size of new rod. reinstall. worked for me dont remember what i used for rod.
you may have to grind of one end of pin to drive it out.

I think you'll have a tough time finding replacement pins.

I opted to get a set of good hinges from someone off this forum (sorry it was years ago..can't remember who I bought them from..)

You want to make a detailed inspection looking for cracks in the sheet metal where the hinges bolt to the door.

If you find cracks, you'll need to get them repaired to get the door working properly.

I had a 50 super 6 rear door that even busted some of the spot welds from the door frame having cracks and sagging.

Yep! I've seen similar problems. Some times the front jambs will work loose around the kick panel area. They will make the door feel floppy, sorta' spongy when you open and close it. It's hard to tell why until you open and close the door from the inside. Then you can see the front jamb flexing. ...Just one more thing to check for.
Good advise Rambo, to check the hinge mounting areas.:)
  • Removed worn out hinge pins on my 41 Hudson sedan. What a pup! Had them cheery red to get them out. Should brace them if you have to do any heavy hammering on the car so you don't bend where its mounted to. I got lucky and found hardened pins at a local hardware store. Couldn't beleive it ,They measured exactly the same as the old ones. A bit too long which I was able to cut to size and put a taper at the end. Wammo ! New hinge pins!

I called the local True Value and had them look it up. Is the pin you found a Clevis pin? thats what the part number crossed to in her book.
