Hello all.

I have recently aquired a 1922 Hudson 7 passenger sedan Biddle & Smart aluminium body. Serial number 305537 & Body number 3027, I was interested to find out how many of these cars may be still around and would like to make contact with anyone who has one of these cars in there collection.

I am also looking for a speedo, tail light and a horn button for this car. I would also be greatfull for any help and info regarding this model Hudson.

Thank you.

    Welcome!

Send me your mailing address and I'll send you the latest edition of the White Triangle News, the award winning magazine published by the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club. Sam Jackson the editor and publisher is a regular on this forum. You will find the magazine a valuable resource for parts and information for your 22.

Send and email to me at HETForkner@aol.com (drop the HET). Put HET Membership in the subject line of the email so that it gets past the spam filter (me).

    Phaeton,

Dave Bean of Ohio is the official registry keeper for the 1921-23 Hudson Super Sixes. ( HETvoyageur@watchtv.net , delete the HET portion before e-mailing.) He would certainly appreciate hearing from you with the vital statistics on your car, so he can enter it on his list of still-existing '22's. At a minimum he'd probably like the car's serial number (and engine number if you have the inclination), short description (model number, number of doors, color, any special options, and the fact that it's a B & S 7-passenger). I don't know if he "tunes in" to this forum (in which case he would have seen your message with all its information.)

He may be able to supply you with a list of other '22 B&S cars like yours, if indeed anyone else registered their cars with him. I know of no other way to determine how many of these cars are still around. By contacting other owners through him, you may come on to some of the answers you seek. Possibly some of them have extra parts they'd sell you or at least they might know where to find them.

Hi and let me add my welcome aboard. This is a great bunch and the HET club is one of the best - I've been a member for 42 years, which says something.

In addition to the club's virtual library taken care of by John O'Halloran we also have an Online library to supplement Johns efforts. There is a 1922 Hudson sales brochure in the Online library at:

http://hetclub.org/burr/sales/1922_hudson_sales_brochure.pdf (link works best with IE - just slow to open with Firefox).

If you haven't joined HET yet I really hope you do. You'll be missing a big part of ownership of a Hudson built vehicle if you don't join up.

Meantime enjoy your 1922 Hudson - I hope the old girl gives you many many hours of pleasure and interest.

  • Hi and welcome. What part of the planet are you from?

  • Hi Paul.
    I am in Queensland Australia.
  • I had a 1923 Hudson Biddle&Smart 7_passenger sedan from 1975 to 1979. I had to sell it and still miss it to this day. I believe the 22 and 23 looked very much alike. In Amesbury, MA where I work and where the body of your car was built, a family named Bailey built carriages and sleighs far many years, but when autos came along their business gradually dried up. They tried making an electric car with Edison batteries but that didn't succeed. In the story of the Bailey family, "Sun on the River", it told how the patriarch of the family bought a hand rolling machine and in his barn started making some window channel. He took the channel to Biddle&Smart who apparently found it superior to what they were using at that time and Bailey became the supplier of window channel to B&S. That took place in 1923 so I would guess that the channel in your car is different from the channel in the car that I had. The channel in my car appeared to be of spring steel and quite tightly gripped the windows. I sprayed a bit of silicone lubricant in the channels to allow the windows to go up and down more easily.
I know you will enjoy that car very much. I is so stately in appearance and drives wonderfully.

  • Thank you Geoff.

What a wonderfull story about the Bailey Family, The only real difference between the 22 & 23 is the 22 has a rolled bottom edge on the doors to match the belt line on the upper part of the door. Do you know what happened to your 23 ? does it still exist somewhere?

    Thank you
    Regards

Geoff and I interviewed a Biddle & Smart employee (sometime in the 70's) - if my memory serves me right this gentleman made the rocker (??) panels. I may go a tad futher out on this shaky limb and say I think he made panels for Geoff's '23, but I'm not sure about that part.

Interesting interview - 50 years later.
