Quick questions,

a.) are exterior body (hood, trunk, fenders) parts interchangeable/same size from 1952 & !953 Hornets?

b.) problems experienced with removal of three speed standard overdrive

from '52 replacing with '53 Hornet hydromatic?

Thanks,

Ray

The sheet metal is all interchangeable. The Hornet hood for a 52 and 53 are physically the same... BUT the hood ornament holes and backing inside the hood are different. Otherwise all the sheetmetal interchanges are transparent.

Transplanting the transmissions is a different, but possible exhange. I am assuming you will have a complete Hornet with Standard and a complete Hornet with Hydamatic. If so following applies:

    1. Steering column shift linkage, indicators, mounting tubes and associated switches and wiring ... moves from one car to other. Steering box and steering shaft DO NOT have to be exchanged.

    2. The engine flywheel must be exchanged ... again... swap hydra to engine that will install in hydra equipped car. Assuming the sealing etc is done IAW the Hudson mechanical proceedures manual.

    3. The starter for the hydra goes with the hydra equipped engine/trans combination

    4. Cross member support for the transmission. The standard is riveted into the chassis ... remove the rivets and the crossmember can be removed. The Hydra cross member is bolted into the car... the receiving points in the frame are riveted into the frame... again drill these out. Transfer the hydra receiving mounts to the Hornet that will ultimately be a hydra equipped car. Bolt/rivet/weld in the mounts... your choice... just make sure you are placing them in the right place... installing the engine with Hydra attached to it is the best method of locating the transmission cross member and supports... e.g. mount the cross member with supports attached on the transmission and installing the supports where they interface the frame rails. This can be done on a hoist... support the rear of the trans with a chain wrapped around the frame rails until you have located and mounted the cross member.

    5. Last but not least... if you are going to this big effort... make sure you change the seals in trans... replace the trans mounts if needed, seal the flywheel to hydra torque convertor cover carefully.

    Good Luck

    Good Morning Ken,

I listed my '52 Hornet on eBay that I recently purchased, if it doesn't bring close to what I paid, I may go forward and restore; it has a great and powerful sounding 308 Twin-H setup and maybe have a 1956 Hudson crated engine with following number SF8112. I've located a '53 Hornet with hydro (mine has standard three speed w/overdrive) and some supporting pot/stainless & sheet metal I require, everything is exploratory presently and will make up my mind soon.

As always thank you for comprehensive professional explanation which I printed out for my file.

    Warmest Personal Regards,

    Ray
