Hood Brace

What kind of material should be used between the hood cross brace and hood. I was able to remove original asphaltic type material intact, but would like to replace it with something that looks a little better.

    I use rubber sheets cut to size. The thickness will depend on the space between the hood sheet metal and the brace. Ace hdwr has 'em. A bit of contact cement is a good idea also.
