While the engine is out of the car and the manifolds are off and the valve adjustment would be much easier ,what would be the recommended " cold " valve adjustment?I know they set @.008 & .010 when hot. Would .010 &.012 be ok? It is a '52 308 with o.d.

  • I have my 54 308 set at 12 and 14 and it runs great. If you will be doing a lot of highway driving at high speed you might consider 14 and 17 per Walt Mordenti.
  • Make sure you use new feeler gauges, not ones that were used to set engines while running. I set all mine at intake 014 and exhaust at 017, cold engine, as today's gas is made to run hot. When I drive across country, 500 miles a day, I set mine at intake 017 and exhaust at 020. I have 139,000 thousand on the motor since rebuild, 13 years, and motor has never been touched. Still have 125 lbs compression. Walt.
  • Walt, what gap setting do you recommend for the earlier 3X5 six engine? Thanks JP
  • 1940 up all 212 should be set cold at 8 and 10. The 175 engines set at 10 and 12. Make sure you use new feeler gauges and not those that were used with engine running as they are pounded out and no correct setting can be had. You must get the feel, a very slight drag. Walt.
  • Thanks, I'm not sure how much high speed driving i will be doing but better safe than sorry,so I will go with the .014-.017 setting. I checked them before going onto it and they were set at .015-.018, I thought that was too loose ,but I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought.I take my Studebaker on 500 mile trips so I'm sure i will the Hudson also. Thanks for the info and a MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU.
  • Is that just 500 mile on one trip? When I start my cross country trip every year, that is 500 miles per day for 6 days straight, total3,300 miles. Then the same on the return trip, which can total up to 10,000 miles. For this one trip a year I set my valves before I start at 17 and 20. When back home I reset them back to 14-17. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year fro Kona on the big Island In Hawaii. Walt
