1929 Hudson Story

In 1958 a farmer drove his grain truck loaded with corn into the ditch and became stuck. He called the Ford garage who had just bought a new bright yellow wrecker with all the bells and whistles to pull him out. They came out and said they would not even try until he unloaded the corn. They were afraid that they might bend the frame on the wrecker. The farmer not wanting to unload all that corn, called the D-X station that had a 29 Hudson coupe converted to a wrecker. Milt the owner, had cut off the rumble seat and mounted a wench and boom on the back of the coupe. He came out and wenched and pulled the truck load with corn out of the ditch. True story as God is my witness. Just one of many stories that exist about the old days.

(have had many '29 Hudsons & with it's unique range of body styles & the big 288 cu. in. F-head engine, I also, as do many who are familiar with them, consider they were the best car Hudson ever built).0 -

I also follow a farmer/antique tractor board- and have gotten a little gun shy of joking about misspellings. Seems that everyone considers their inability to spell as a badge of honor. I generally don't comment on spelling (unless its so bad it makes the post unintelligible), but some guy was complaining about not being able to find information about his "Kabota", and I modestly suggested that Google would probably work better for him if he spelled it "Kubota".
You'd think I'd insulted the Pope. So to prove my point, I googled "Kabota". It came back "Did you mean Kubota"? and proceeded to give me a zillion hits.
So the dumbing down of America continues. . .:(0 -

Do you guys realise just how small the rumble seat of a 29 Hudson is?? My recommendation is removal of the locating screw in the top of the gearbox to allow the gear lever to be rotated out of the way & a open door.. Those are narrow babes!! I've had my Coupe since I was a teenager & the memories ... :P :P0

Sorry about confusing winch with wench. Maybe its the the 20 plus years on massive doses of Lipitor or the fact that I have been told I have dementia and then no dementia. Maybe its the fact that my secretary always type the letters and I lost my ability to spell. Who knows. All I do know is I have slipped and did not take any offence as to the comments. I have been a member of HET for over 50 years and really enjoy the forumm. I will continue to contribute what I can with the misuse and occasional mispelled words.0

Having been in this here HET Club for just over 40 years I can tell you, tho you aleady know it, that there was no disrespect meant by anybody regarding comments on your spelling. My computer can't spell either. :silly: It's just some of us cannot resist an opening.
I'm reminded of a comment made on the old HET chat page about 20 years back made by the late Jim Fortin. He was talking about his cat and posted on the chat page that he was signing off "to go play with his pussy!!!" Poor Jim - he was so embarrassed he didn't come back to the chat page for about 3 or 4 days after that faux pas.

As a yound student at the University (I graduated as an English Major) I would have a lot of fun with the language we speak here in America. And as you all know it can be somewhat different depending on what part of America you are from. I always liked to quote Mark Twain. He said: "I feal sorry for any man who don't know more than one way to spell a word."
When the computer and spell check came along I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It is not perfect but it does a lot better job than I do.....0 -

My favorite 1929 Hudson memory is passing the stepdowns , going uphill ,
on the way to the Nation meet in Maryland.
The look on thier face was "priceless"

and I'll always remember Jack Smith from Canada driving one of his fleet of '29s to the Nationals inc. sometimes towing a small house trailer!
He was a true "master" with those big F-head engines too - I couldn't get over how smooth & quiet he was able to get them to run & idle!0 -
Yes , He was a 29 Master. He showed me how to retard the timing enough to get a nickel to stand on edge on the valve cover while at idle.
You could count the fan blades as they were turning.
