RAILTON FAILMILE 3 on eBay UK

Its not the prettiest of Railtons IMHO. The front half is OK and typical Railton, but from the B pillar back it all seems rather squashed up, almost as though they were trying to conceal the length of the chassis.0

Is this a home-built body ? It looks like it - and a rather amateurish job as well.0

I got an e-mail from one of my ROC buddies & he said that that is the case.
It is on a '37 H8 chassis.0 -
Pete, just for comparison, do you have photos of a proper Fairmile 3?0
-
not of a Fairmile III sports tourer.0

Do not be too fast to pass judgment. If you check out the photos on the Railton Owners club website you will see some cars that look very much like this one. Most are on Terraplane format and some have the eight cyl engine. I too think it looks to be a cobbled build but I am most often wrong...
There is one very much like it (page 48)(front end) in John Dyson's book on Coachcraft. He states that it was built by Coachcraft and reboddied later on.
I checked the number given in the Coachcraft book and it is not in it. The chassie number just before it is a Railton Sandown Saloon built on 2/11/1939?0 -
I guess I may get slaughtered for saying this, but many of the cars in the ROC now look far different from what they were like when first built.
Some have had the bodywork replaced with home built confections rather like this one that we're talking about. For many years keeping an old US built car on the road in the UK in anything like an original condition was virtually impossible because of unavailability of replacement parts over here.
So these cars are perhaps what you might call English streetrods - there, that's my death sentence signed !0 -
The seller has posted information that the car was rebodied in the early 60's as the Richard Early Special0

"Special" = English euphemism for "street rod"
