Old Junkyard Getting Ready to Crush

A friend just joined the Kaiser Frazer Club and his first newsletter states that an old junkyard in West Virginia will be crushing all the cars and closing down forever. I don't know how many or what is in there and have no commercial interest in it, just don't want to see any good stuff gone forever. The phone number is 304-229-5750. I do not have a name or information other than that above. I hope this helps someone.

    Take Bruces suggestion. When I moved to east Tenn in 1973 I was told a yard there had sold all the cars for scrap at $11.00 each a couple year earlier. I heard this yard had cars from the teens to 1970. I hated I was to late to see them, especially all the complete cars in the sheds.

    The phone number indicates that the cars belong to collector Torrey Kirby who lives near Inwood, WV (north of Winchester, Virginia). He's doubtless thinning his herd. It's not really a "junkyard" as such. They're mostly if not all non-Hudsons.

    I found a list of cars for sale by him, on the internet, but it proves to be from 2006! So apparently Torrey is thinning his herd again. But I can't find a list of the latest cars on the internet.

    This is not really a commercial junkyard, but a private collection of at one time close to 200 cars, which is why he had to get a salvage license. He doesn't really sell parts,( just whole cars)so the 100 or so cars left are pretty much complete but they have been in the elements a long time. Most of them are Studebakers with a few Amcs Kaisers Packards thrown. He had a couple of Hudsons but they have been gone a loong time. Mr Kirby is located near Martinsburg WV.

    I checked out Kirby’s place about 4 years ago. There are a lot of cars, a mishmash of AMCs, older Jeep stuff, a couple of Packards, a number of Kaisers and Studebakers, you might have been able to find a few to restore but 98% were just parts cars. I don’t remember seeing any Hudsons in the bunch? Kirby does have some restored cars in the garage and he also has one of the only two known surviving diesel Studebaker Larks!

    Ok I am going to call them Monday an head up there this week. I am going to see if they have any parts for my 74 F250, 66 Mustang or 36 Hudson 4 door I am getting ready to buy. I am bout 4 hours away 1 way according to mapquest.

    Please note that this is not really a junk or scrap yard, it is Torrey Kirby’s residence that has the cars sitting around an adjoining lot. There is a lot of grass and critters (luckily it is winter since when I was there last there was poison ivy everywhere and wasp/yellow jacket nests in some of the cars! The other issue if I remember right is that he wanted top dollar for what was there. That was then perhaps he has changed his mind on this if he is getting ready to crush some of it.

    Sadly, I went there with Joel Horn to check the place out. It was the first time I met Joel and I sure miss him, what a great guy and Hudnut!

    Kal- he doesn't have any of those vehicles, but if you just want to look around he is very hospitable and has a story for each car and if you like larks its worth a visit.
