That was apparently the high compression head back then. I have seen a couple photos of them,

No, that is the std. head on a '34 H8, referred to by the Brits as the "high spline head" used in '34 & '35.
I'm sure this is the one Bill Albright bought out of Pa. from an old HET friend of his (Bill was from Pa.). Bill kept it for a while then sold it to a "high roller" from San Diego who re-restored it, who then sold it, & now it's in Florida.
My friend Buzz & I helped the guy in S. D. restore it as it was really worn out, both the engine & the chassis. The restoration shop that did the work was/is in Escondido where we both lived at the time.
Guy paid Bill too much for it in lieu of all it needed then sunk another "wad" into it. When he tried to resell it in S.D. asked way too much for it, guess he finally got a buyer.0 -

I'm with you Spencer, never saw these on a 1934, only on 1935,in Australia anyway, I have a 6 cyl two piece aluminium came off a 1935.
Looks like a beautiful motor car, it also appears to have a Terraplane steering wheel, the 8 cylinders had a large boss where the horn button goes.0 -
Then why does the phot show a tag "High Octne Fuel" .

I'd have to look in a parts book to see if that head offered in '34 too.
The tag is on the head because is a high compression head. As I recall the lower section is aluminum, upper iron.
I bought the head shown in the photo at the National held in Detroit I believe in '89(?) in the swap meet area as soon as I saw it, early the 1st day, then took it over & put it on the tailgate of my truck & photographed it as I'd never seen one before. I'd had the special 2nd headgasket that is used for a long time as had the old either McCord or Victor catalog telling what the application for that gasket # was.
I bought it for my friend Buzz as thought he'd want to use it on his '34 Railton as he was racing it in vintage sports car races. He still has the head & the special gasket but has never put it on his car.0 -
Buzz & Ivan, who frequently races his Railton LST replica, use one of these heads, which is an Edmonds "hot rod" '50s era item.0
